The First Days Of Spring – Review: Olfactive Studio Flash Back

Olfactive Studio released a new – their fifth – perfume this spring and while I’m sure it works well year-round, it feels ideally suited for the season.

Flash Back is paired with a photograph by Laurent Segretier. For the other four perfumes I could see or rather smell the connection between photo and perfume very clearly, here I was a bit at a loss as to how and why to two were connected. I blamed my woefully underdeveloped artistic side. Anyway, the lack of insight into the visual did not detract me from enjoying the scent.

flashback bottleFlash Back was created by Olivier Cresp and includes notes of rhubarb, grapefruit, orange, pink pepper, Granny Smith apple, vetiver, cedar, amber and musks.

Flash Back opens with a flash (pun intended) of tart green rhubarb surrounded by citrus notes and a leafy green aspect. It is refreshing, it wakes me up and it invariably makes me smile. There is something so carefree and uplifting about that note. It reminds me of childhood days in my Grandmother’s garden, crawling though the bushes, gathering rhubarb to be made into dessert later (having a Christopher Brosius moment here, only sans tomatoes 😉 ).

The perfume becomes warmer over time, the freshly picked rhubarb is made into a compote, with a little apple and some sugar added, served in a wooden bowl.

Before you think Flash Back is too edible – it is not. I wouldn’t even call it a gourmand scent, but it is undoubtedly delicious.

The main idea – green, no GREEN – is evident throughout the perfume’s lifetime on my skin, which is very good. I get at least eight hours of weartime and while the perfume mellows over time after the sharpish green start, it keeps on emanating its fresh, green theme that is kept alive by a wonderful vetiver note (20% Haitian vetiver went into the formula) and the cool wooden clarity of cedar.

I was thinking about perfumes to compare Flash Back to, and I only come up with Guerlain’s Un Ville, Un Parfum London for it’s rhubarb note (this is a sweeter, warmer version though) and Hermès Rose Ikebana, that also plays with a tart rhubarb opening to highlight a fresh and airy rose.

I mentioned my Grandmother’s garden above, and this is actually not the only flash back Flash Back provided me over the week that I have tested it. Slowly but surely I began to realise how appropriate its name is. Thinking about it, the pixellated woman in the photo is actually a very good representation of something or someone you remember. It is never a clear picture, never a complete one that your mind provides, it is distorted, subjective, incomplete and blurry. But the essence of the memory, the emotion, is always very clear, sometimes harsh, sometimes tender, but always clear.

I am no longer confused about the connection between the two works of art.

Sometimes all it takes is a deep breath to bring back the things or the people we have feared were long gone.

The Last Days Of Winter – Review: Olfactive Studio Lumière Blanche

Today, on April 3, I went out into five inches of freshly fallen snow, mummified once more into a stylish re-interpretation of the Michelin-man, dragging two children in the stages between whining and all-out screaming behind me through the icestorm, to distribute them to their various schools. Driving was out of the question.

A spring perfume review seems out of the question too.

But thankfully I have something for today that not only fits the weather, but manages to make my day better in the time it takes to take a deep breath.

Olfactive Studio is a line I very much like and admire. Céline Verleure is one of those women who struck out to make their dream come true and seems to be doing so without compromising it on the way. The first three perfumes that launched the brand have been well received and rightly so. Olfactive Studio, for me, is a package deal where every detail is right. From the idea to the execution, from the juice to the bottle, things seem like one organic piece.

Céline has released Lumière Blanche last fall, but I only now got the chance to try it. Bad weather or not, this is a perfume I like – like a lot!

lumiere_blancheLumière Blanche was created by Sidonie Lancesseur and includes notes of cardamom, star anise, cinnamon, iris, almond milk, cashmere woods, cedarwood, sandalwood, tonka bean, and white musks.

Like every perfume of the line, Lumière Blanche is paired with a photograph. This one by Italian photographer Massimo Vitali is of a white, white beach, but my eye cannot but see snow in this picture and for me the scent inspired by it, is a warm, cosy blanket ideally suited to protect you from the cold, white world outside.

Cardamom is the primary note that opens up to you upon spraying Lumière Blanche. Combined with other spices, this cool note gains warmth through cinnamon and aniseed. It smoothly floats over a milky iris that seems to hover and undulate over a woody base full of creamy sandalwood buffered in soft musk.

The whole perfume gives an impression of weightless warmth and soft tenderness. Its milky, spicy and creamy aspects trigger regressive impulses in me. I dream of warm beds, soft blankets, comfy pillows and leaving the world outside to hurtle on it its mad pace, giving me space to breathe and be content in my very own cocoon, with just a book and a cup of tea. (Detail on the side: I adore the fact that this perfume is milky white, not clear, that visual correlation to the scent, makes the experience with this perfume perfect for me.)

The sandalwood in the base is what remains for hours, creamy, milky and warmly spicy until the end (about eight hours later), Lumière Blanche is a delightful, non-edible comfort scent that never overwhelms, but gently cushions with its understated presence. It has radiance and a good sillage, but feels airy and light. I am reminded of Jean-Claude Ellena’s creations L’Eau d’Hiver for Frédéric Malle and Santal Massoia for Hermès, both firm favorites in my collection.

Lumière Blanche will be another, I’m sure of that.

The newest release by Olfactive Studio, Flash Back, is perfectly geared for spring, so I really hope next week’s weather will bend to my perfumed agenda. 😉

Finding Hidden Beauty In Upstate New York

By Brie

I have slowly over time become a woman of simple means. I literally own only five pairs of shoes. Give me the outdoors with a full moon in a star studded sky and a hot cup of tea, barefoot in my yoga outfit and I am blissful. Let me dabble in my essential oil blending and leisurely read my favorite perfume blogs and I am happy.

My teenage daughters, on the other hand, are a completely different story. They think of themselves as fashionistas, makeup artists, manicurists and budding perfumistas. If they could, they would arrange marriages to Birgit’s sons so as to inherit her gorgeous Hermès scarves and vast perfume collection!

So imagine my surprise and thrill when their recent interest in photography sprung forth these meditative pictures of nature from our backyard in upstate New York.

A little visual treat from my neck of the woods….enjoy!

IMG_2217Editor’s Note: Many, many thanks to Brie and her daughters for the beautiful photos, they fit wonderfully in the Hidden Beauty series. I truly enjoyed them and I’m sure many others will too. As for the marriage arrangements – preliminary negotiations have begun. 😉

Brie’s thoughtful post made me think: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we created a little archive of beautiful spots from all over the world here on OT? I’d love that. How about you?

If you want to share your photos or ideas for the Hidden Beauty series, please don’t hesitate to contact me under olfactoria at gmail dot com. I would be delighted!

I completely agree with Ines’s thoughts… can’t wait!

The only problem I see here –  it’s going to be available in early autumn 2013. 😉

I can’t help but wonder, judging by the notes, if it would make a good spring perfume…

Hearts And Crafts – Les Mains d’Hermès, A Documentary

I couldn’t resist to share this wonderful movie with you.

In this documentary, we get to take a peek into the world of Hermès craftsmen and their work. I find it very touching how they talk about their love for what they do. It is more than a job for these people, it is a vocation and the pride and the genuine satisfaction they radiate is a pleasure to watch.

A word of warning though: it is a very long video, brew a cup of tea and curl up on the couch tonight – and enjoy!

Checking In – And Checking Out

I wanted to quickly pop in and let you know that this week will be a bit low on posts unfortunately. I have two half-baked reviews in the making that are not quite done yet and this week is spring break. My boys and I are planning to hit Vienna’s museums one after the other and this usually leaves me happy, but exhausted.

I will leave you with a few images from my favorite chocolate shop’s Easter decorations and you’ll definitely hear from me once more this week.

Have a great time, and please take a look through the archives in the meantime.

Monday Question – What Is Your Perfume Shopping Style?

Are you an impulsive shopper?

Do you plan your next purchase with the precision of a brain surgeon?

Are you dedicated to extensive research and comparison shopping?

Or are you more of a sniff, grab and go person?

Do you ever experience buyer’s remorse?

question-mark

My Answer:

In the first years of my addiction obsession hobby I used to commit a quite a few sniff, grab and go crimes. I am an impulsive person when it comes to shopping, and very often that has resulted in mistakes I regretted.

I wish I would have been a bit more discerning then, but when in the throes of passion for perfume, reason often didn’t stand a chance.

This has changed now, the rabid passion has abated and made room for a more level-headed approach to buying perfume. These days I deliberate for a good while (my rule to wait a month before buying something I want, has proven to be very helpful) and I think about whether my collection doesn’t already fill the perceived need a new perfume evokes.

More often than not it does.

How about your shopping style?

My Little List Of Happiness – Things That Make Me Smile

I want to post a list of things that make me happy once a month and I hope you join me in the comments with your happiness inducing little things.

Frivolity is the key to eternal youth.

– Ines de la Fressange

1. Lake Como:

comersee-605

Everything about this little town in northern Italy makes me smile. It is such a pretty place on earth, friendly, welcoming, the food is to die for and the lake… ah, the lake. I enjoy a lake much more than the sea – no waves, no salt water, no sand, but clean water and grassy shores. Como is my mental escape. Remember this: George is never wrong.

2. Chanel Camellias:

camellia

Chanel’s flower is the camellia and I love how they use this iconic image again and again. They put it on their shopping bags (don’t worry, husband, all I got was a catalogue, and Chanel is classy enough to put that in a big, black bag complete with white camellia) and I’m looking at one right now, as it is on my desk to cheer me on whenever I lose my motivation or train of thought while writing. It makes me happy.

3. An unexpected good smell out of nowhere:

cat smelling

Don’t you love it when you walk along the street and all of a sudden a wonderful smell is in the air? Passing a bakery, a woman with a great perfume, newly blooming flowers in a garden… I love it when I smell something wonderful when I least expect it. It happens not often, but when it does it is pure happiness right then and there.

4. The feel and look of high quality leather:

35cmBolide4

It makes me incredibly happy when I see a well made handbag for example. Craftsmanship, quality, luxury, these attributes make me happy. Nothing compares to the feeling of touching something that is flawlessly made, expensive and unique – and vintage. Yes, regular readers will astutely deduce that Hermès might be what I’m talking about here. A girl is allowed to dream…

What makes you happy?
