Sadness Wrapped In Beauty – What My Spring Smells Like

This spring has only a few days on its back, but perfume-wise, I started a bit earlier. So for a few weeks now, I have been smelling of spring.

20130418-182616.jpg
Aside from my obvious choices (Hermès Vetiver Tonka, Hermès Rose Ikebana, Hermès Pamplemousse Rosé. Yes, I know, it is Hermès, Hermès and again Hermès – I sincerely apologize for my stubborn obsession with the house.), I surprised myself by craving two perfumes that don’t seem very spring-like at the outset, but have proven to fit perfectly with what I need right now – light, warmth and a subtle undercurrent of sadness wrapped in beauty:
Guerlain Vega and Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental, both perfumes that inspired me to use poetry in the reivews.

What are you wearing this spring? What mood should your perfume enhance or create?

In Search Of Hidden Beauty – International Edition II

I received so many lovely photos from all over the world, thank you so much for sending them. Here are a few more from upstate New York, from Sweden and from the Philippines. Enjoy!

“My love of reading began over forty years ago when my father brought home “Hooked on Phonics” and taught me to read at the age of three. As an only child books were my constant companion. One of my favorite libraries is one I frequent on my way home from work for weekly pick ups of books for myself and my children. The library sits on top of a very large hill with spectacular views. In the summer we visit it often, with Brittany, Colin, Courtney and I sitting outside in the large gazebo escaping into our own secret worlds courtesy of our favorite authors.” By Brie, New York, USA

Carrie, Springtime And I – Review: Jul Et Mad Stilettos On Lex

By Sandra

When I first smelled Jul et Mad’s Stilettos on Lex I actually giggled. Strange reaction to have, but truth be told, it was a giggle of joy at having the opportunity to smell such a beautiful perfume and of the image that came up. Immediately, without knowing anything about the brand or the story behind the perfume, images of Carrie Bradshaw in Manolo Blahniks came to mind, when I read the name of the perfume and smelled it.

Say it with me ‚Stilettos on Lex’. Sounds luxurious, refined and fun. I had no expectations about the perfume. I finally looked up the brand Jul et Mad.

stilettos on lex

The Jul et Mad website lists the following notes for the perfume created by Dorothée Piot:

Head : Lemon, Pear, Davana, Plum Liquor
Heart: Lily of the Valley, Violette Leaves, Rose Absolute, Heliotrope, Iris, Carnation
Bottom: Musk, Madagascar Vanilla, Indonesian Patchouli, Atlas Cedarwood

The story behind the perfume is of an intriguing encounter on Lexington Avenue. One where the woman is walking in stilettos and has an aura and presence that move the people around her. She leaves a lasting impression of her heels on the pavement and her silhouette and of course her perfume. This is the beginning of the love story between a man and a woman (between the two cofounders of Jul et Mad).

Now, I don’t know about you, but I have never encountered a perfume where the image that was conjured up in my mind upon reading the name was almost exactly what the PR material intended for me. Never. To think of Carrie Bradshaw in her Blahniks crossing the streets of New York City almost on her tippytoes in a gorgeous outfit leaves me startled. So far so good.

Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall on Location for "Sex and the City: The Movie" - September 21, 2007

Stilettos on Lex smells just as good if not better than the image it conjurs. It starts off with quite a bit of pear and plum on me and stays there for some time. I love it and keep burying my nose into my wrist wishing I could pull off the Blahniks with such ease and comfort. After about half an hour the perfumes shifts to a softer, slightly powdery fruity floral. I am assuming that this is the heliotrope I am getting. Lily of the valley and rose start to soften the fruity start and thefragrance becomes almost ethereal. It dries down to a soft fruity floral. This perfume has excellent sillage and longevity. Seven hours in and I can still smell it.

I can’t be young again, but I can create a memorable day for myself. The day is a crisp spring day in Vienna. The sky is crystal blue and the buds are slowly starting to come out on the trees. I hear birds chirping for the first time in months. I feel carefree and full of joie de vivre that comes with spring’s reawakening. This is the perfect perfume to accompany me on such a day.

I surely cannot pull off the stilettos on the cobble stones – not even kitten heels. Besides, I am a notorious klutz and have been known to crumble onto the pavement without knowing why. But this perfume will make my sneakers or flats almost invisible. The perfume will be what’s memorable. It will leave me (and maybe others) with a lasting impression of beauty on a spring day.

Spring 2012 Volksgarten

Will my husband find the perfume as stunning as I do?

He does, and our love story continues…

Meeting Ines – Three Fumies In Vienna

Ines of All I am – A Redhead visited Vienna this past weekend to compete in the Vienna City Marathon! What an admirable feat, she did so well. Bravo Ines!

But the best part for me was getting to meet her. Despite me being a bit under the weather still, I hope Ines had fun.

Lovely Ines

Important things coming first, after meeting up in the city center with my friend Sandra and her son, our first port of call was Le Parfum on Petersplatz where Ines bought a bottle of Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensée for a friend back home.

Sandra and Ines

Then, discreetly whining children in tow, we made our way through the first spring weekend – tourists en masse – marathon in town – throngs to a café, where we could sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. Niki promptly fell asleep, hard wire chairs notwithstanding, the pressure of meeting Ines finally falling off, he gave in to his delayed nap schedule.

Ines and a very tired looking Olfactoria with an even more tired Niki, post nap.

The ritual exchange of fragrant gifts ensued, and aside from gorgeous vintage samples (Balmain Vent Vert among them), Ines brought goodies from Croatia, I especially look forward to indulge in the sweet liqueur she brought. The kids were ecstatic about their chocolate filled goodie bags – thank you Ines!

The younger generation had fun too – Paul and Sean.

After refreshments, talk and naps, we moved on to Le Dix-Neuf in Seilergasse just around the corner, Vienna’s newest and coolest perfume boutique. I promise to finally write about it in detail next week! Ines emerged with a handful of mouilettes and smelling deliciously of Amouage Opus VI.

Let's do this again soon!

Let’s do this again soon!

My children were then done for the day, so we had to send Ines on alone to try the new Malle for Dries van Noten at Pure Day Spa on Tuchlauben. I was sorry that I had not been at my best due to us three still fighting some nasty and persistent bug, but I was glad I could meet Ines. Hopefully she’ll be back next year to run again!

Many thanks to Sandra and Sean for accompanying us.

Monday Question – Is Your Perfume Hobby A Secret?

Are you out in the open about your perfume hobby in real life?

Do you know real life perfumistas?

Is your scented life strictly lived online?

Have you ever met other Perfumistas in person?

Is Perfumeland your secret hideaway or do you waft and talk offline as well?

20130413-221313.jpg

My Answer:

Before I started blogging I never talked about perfume with anyone. Somehow I kept it a secret without even realizing. Maybe I thought it was a bit too indulgent, luxurious, vain? (Which it is absolutely not, we are talking personal neuroses here, not facts.)
As a blogger though I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people in real life. They have all made my life so much richer and I have found true, real-life friends through this shared passion. I’ve grown more outspoken about my perfume hobby too, although I still don’t advertise it. But if asked… try to shut me up again. 😉

So, what about you?

Is your perfumed passion a secret?

Welcoming Spring – From My Bed…

Spring is making a slow appearance here in Austria, the sun is out, the air is getting warmer, green perfumes beckon – and I am promptly down with the flu, again.
My boys and I are sneezing, sniffling and coughing with the best of them.
I hope you are having a better day, dear readers.
I leave you for today with a picture from Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral, were I will be meeting Ines from All I am – A Redhead this weekend.

Have a great day,

Monday Question – How Do You Organize Your Collection?

Are you a neat freak who keeps perfumes in alphabetical order on the shelves?

Are you more of a free spririt (who is unable to find what you are looking for in under twenty minutes)?

How is your perfume collection organized?

Do you have a system?

Do you feel you need one?

Or are you the type who loves some chaos?

question-markMy Answer:

My perfume closet is actually quite nicely organized – upon first glance that is. It looks good, but that does not mean there is a system in operation. I can find everything I am looking for though, while it may not be a system a normal person would approve of, I know where I put what and that is good enough for me.

Where it is getting really chaotic though, is my office. I keep my samples and small decants near my writing desk. There are several containers and there is an attempt at a system in evidence, but in reality, it is as chaotic as possible. I just can’t be bothered to bring law and order to my samples for the simple reason that I suspect that they have a life of their own, and that it is not my place to interfere with their secret shenanigans, like multiplying on the sly and playing hide and seek.

What about your perfumes? Are they sitting pretty or are they running amok?
