Monday Question – What Is Your Attitude to Skank In Perfume?

By Tara

How do you feel about perfumes featuring sweaty cumin, indolic florals, beastly musks and animalic ouds?

What are your favourite skanky perfumes?

Do you love an all out skank-fest or do you prefer something with just a touch of naughtiness?

Do you have reservations about wearing your skank laden perfumes in public?

Or do you have zero tolerance for anything remotely filthy in your fragrance?

question-mark

My Answer:

I have very limited tolerance for skank, especially when it comes to cumin notes that mimic body odour. However, I can appreciate the following perfumes which have varying degrees of skank-factor.

L’Artisan Parfumeur AmaranthineThis milky floral has a dirty little secret.

Vero Profumo Rubj EdPDo I want to smell like a ravished ballerina? Maybe…

Mona di Orio Les Nombres d’Or Oud : In an over-saturated market, this animalic oud still stands out as the real deal.

Do share your skanky loves (or hates) in the comments please.

Fragrant Bliss On Italian Shores – A Quick Buon Giorno!

I am still lounging by the pool while writing this, but I wanted to share my blissed out state of perfumed contentment with all of you.

On our trip to Venice (more about all of it to follow once I’m home), I found a gorgeous perfume to make me happy.

The very Italian Santa Maria Novella Vaniglia is hitting all my fragrance-related buttons. Warm, cosy, elegant, deep, scrumptious and utterly delightful, Vaniglia is exactly the kind of deep, dark vanilla I have been looking for.

On another note, yesterday my blog hit 1 Million visits. I’m quite floored by that number actually and incredibly happy and grateful to all of you who visit, read or comment. A big thank you from the bottom of my heart!

See you soon,
B xx

A Tuscan Retreat Part II – The City Of Florence

By Sandra

During our recent vacation in Tuscany we managed to spend a whole day in Florence. We parked the car up on the Piazzale Michelangelo and were greeted with the most stunning view of the city right beneath us. The breathtaking panoramic view took the words right out of our mouths and we just lingered on the square for the longest time digesting the view. Even the kids were mesmerized for a while.

Florence 10

I could write a bit about the city’s historical value and its beauty, but I have decided to let the pictures speak for themselves.

Florence 9

In no way was I looking for any perfumeries in Florence. With that many family members in tow, it was just not conducive to go searching and sniffing. After we all finished lunch in the square of the Palazzo Vecchio we miraculously split up to discover certain parts of the city that were of interest to us. Before going off on her own merry way, my mother dragged me right out of the restaurant into a store next door telling me along the way that this store would be right up my alley. I was thinking shoes, scarves, gosh anything but what it turned out to be.

My mother took me directly to the store of i Profumi di Firenze at the Palazzo Vecchio. The store front window is not very telling of what is about to come and if I had no idea about perfume I would have most certainly missed it. Mom was right – it is a store much to my liking!

Florence 8 perfume

Now, going back to my little knowledge of the perfume company I quickly remembered reading Neil’s hilarious take on testing his neighbours purchases from i Profumi di Firenze. I quickly sought out his famed Vaniglia del Madagascar and put some on my wrist. But I tried the concentrated oil and it initially reminded me of another vanilla perfume that I have Il Profumo – Vanille Bourbon Osmo Absolu and so I dismissed it. I tried several of their offerings and came away with three beautiful perfumes (their prices are so reasonable that I could easily justify picking up three!).

The problem came up the next morning. I should have paid closer attention to Neil’s review and picked up a bottle! Now, I have to go back and get one. Wow! What a delicious vanilla perfume that turned out to be. I will probably buy the cologne and not the oil just so that I can get to that yumminess sooner. I am kicking myself still and wishing that I would have just paid the €15 for the oil when it was in my hand. Darn it.

Florence

I’ll leave you with a few shots of Florence…

And as if Neil didn’t have me lusting after the I Profumi di Firenze already, your description sends me over the edge into hunting mode… It’s a good thing I’m at least in the right country at the moment. 😉

Monday Question – Have You Been On A Perfume Quest?

By Tara

Have you undertaken a long and exhaustive search in order to fill a particular gap in your perfume collection?

What kind of fragrance were you hunting for?

What perfumes did you try along the way?

What was the perfume that finally filled the gap perfectly?

Or are you still looking for that perfect incense, green, rose, vanilla (etc.) fragrance?

question-mark

My Answer:

I was looking for the perfect beach fragrance for a long time. Not something to wear on the beach, but rather a perfume that would recall that feeling of lying on the sand in a tropical locale. A major stumbling block was the fact that I’m not a fan of overly coconutty or salty notes. I tried Perfumista favourites Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder and Eau de Merveilles by Hermes, but neither of these worked for me.

Then Olfactoria told me about her recent love of Prodigieux Le Parfum by Nuxe. I ordered a bottle and it turned out to be the perfect blend of tropical flowers and very subtle, suntan oil style coconut. I had found my Holy Grail beach scent.

Please share your own perfume quests in the comments.

Editor’s Note: Since Tara is out with her delightful niece during the day, she will be answering your comments in the evening! So please don’t feel abandoned! 😉

A Tuscan Retreat Part I – Sandra’s Italian Vacation

By Sandra

We took our first vacation in over 8 years that did not include a conference of some sort. Vacation this year included my entire immediate family and a cousin with her husband.

House morning1

The house in the early morning

To be honest, I worried that it was not exactly what I would consider ideal for a first vacation without work. Well, luckily I was wrong. It turned out to be the most fantastic vacation we have ever had as the setting was pristine and we all got along splendidly.

Tuscany was nothing short of marvelous. If you have ever read E.M. Forster’s A Room with a View, watched the film adaptation or visited yourself, you know how magical Tuscany is.

The house that we rented slept 13 and much to the delight of the kids it came with an infinity pool. We took drives to the surrounding towns of Castellina in Chianti, Cortona, Florence, Monterrigioni, San Gimignano and Volterra.

People In Perfumeland – Portia Turbo Of Australian Perfume Junkies

Portia Turbo of Australian Perfume Junkies is to Perfumeland, what color is to a rainbow. She is loud, fun and simply adorable. She is also generous, warm-hearted and a fabulous writer.

Let’s give the stage to the fabulous Miss Portia!

A good day starts with… Lunch? A lazy wake up without an alarm and a quiet lie in and think while halfway between sleep and awake.

I’d never leave the house without… sadly it’s my phone, wallet and my toenails painted.

I always feel good when… there feels like enough time to do everything that needs to be done. Also the hour I have to myself after cleaning the house every Wednesday, BLISS!

My favorite thing in the world is… there are so many things vying for top place, I’m going to cheat and give you three even though there are ten at the top. My friends, work, dog.

The next thing I want to buy is… built in cupboards and glass front shelves along one wall of the dining room with a stone benchtop. Currently there are three beautiful 20+ dining sets and all the accompaniments crushed into cupboard space way too small.

The place I always come back to is… home. The place I am residing in is the one I was brought home from the hospital to when I was adopted. On and off through my life I have come back here to live and it is wonderful.

My personal style is… eclectic, style free, a boho mish mash of fabulous odds and ends from around the world.

My favorite perfume… Shalimar by Guerlain, in all its forms, strengths, years of production, nothing has matched it yet for me.

When I travel, I… find friends wherever I go.

To relax I need… a darkened room with something comfortable to lie on.

I like to gift people with… my time. It’s the most precious thing I have to give away. I’ll only be on earth for 60-100 years, if I give you some of that then you have the most precious thing I have to give.

When I have a bad day, I… shout, grumble & snarl at people and generally enjoy myself immensely.

I find my inspiration… everywhere.

Something I would never want to miss… a bath! I love to have a bath every day and couldn’t imagine a house or apartment without one.

My last mistake was… major mistake was picking the crew who renovated our bathrooms, laundry and kitchen. They took me for a ride.

In my fridge there is always… milk, cheese, pickles, mayonnaise, garlic, potatoes, onions, carrots, shallots. Everything else is subject to change.

On my nightstand I keep… books (there are always dozens unread and you’ll still often find me buried in an old favourite), phone & charger and tissues because I hate getting out of bed to blow my nose.

The perfect weekend starts with… a pedicure and yum-cha with the crew, we try to do it fortnightly.

My role model is… Helen Lawson from Valley Of The Dolls by Jacqueline Susann.

Something I always want to be asked in questionnaires like this is… who is your favourite artist: I have a few but the ones I own that I really love are Gloria Petyarre, Charles Billich and Norman Lindsay. 2 very Australian artists and one imported to Australia.

Portia (out of costume) and I in Vienna

Isn’t Portia a hoot (a hoot and a half, as the husband would say)?

I would love to join Portia and her crew on a Saturday for yum-cha, a concept of Chinese brunch that I only learned about from her.

My life is richer for knowing Portia – Perfumeland is too!

Monday Question – How Do You Choose A Perfume?

How do you go about searching for a new scent?

Do you stalk the blogs and online stores?

Do you go for scented expeditions at department stores and specialty shops?

Are you inspired by advertisements?

Do you look for particular notes?

Do you always get samples first or are you prone to impulsively buy a bottle?

How do you select what is right for you?

question-mark

My Answer:

Today we have a very broad question. I’m interested in how you narrow down your choices, how you select among the sea of fragrances we are exposed to these days?

I mostly get interested in a perfume when I see it announced on a blog somewhere or get a press release from the brand. My interest in piqued when I like what I see (i.e. the bottle, and yes, I do judge a book by its cover, I have to, at least at first) and what I read about the notes. The prettiest bottle with notes of handpicked Himalayan berries, spun silver sugar, purple patchouli and angel’s tears extract cannot entice me to go in for a closer encounter.

Mostly I try to avoid spending money on samples these days, primarily for the reason that I have so many and have spent so much money already, that I try to get my nose to a store and smell the scent for free. But if I am absolutely smitten by the idea of a perfume, I pay for a sample. If I’m not only intrigued, but my fantasies go through with me and I am convinced that this is the one and only, the perfect scent I need to make my life complete, I have been known to blind buy a bottle.

Did I find the one and only, the perfect scent yet?

Unfortunately no, but I do have a goodish amount of clinically depressed bottles I shun and never wear, because they had the temerity to disappoint my exalted vision…

How is it with you?
