A Little Slice of Heaven – Review: Indult Tihota

By Sandra

Since diving head first into this bottomless pit of perfume addiction, I have been searching for the “perfect” vanilla. I have come close with a few vanilla-centric perfumes, but something was always lacking.

Perhaps this obsession was somehow related with my search for the ultimate recipe for allergy-free vanilla cakes. To drive my craving and longing to almost insane heights, I kept reading up about Indult’s Tihota. A vanilla perfume whith a reputation of almost legendary proportions, Tihota sounded truly amazing, but had long been discontinued.

indult tihota

Imagine my jubilation when I read about the great come-back of the house of Indult and in particular the fabled Tihota! Not only was the perfume returning, but presumably without a reformulation. I contacted the new propiertor of Indult and quickly ascertained when I would be able to get my greedy hands on a bottle. Forget about sampling it first, sampling is for wimps – I wanted, I needed this perfume. NOW!

Blind buying is normally taboo for me, but this was an exception. I ordered myself a bottle and put it under the Christmas tree.

Finally, I was able to open the package and take a whiff of this perfume which has a cult following and which made me sceptical at first about trying it.

Tihota was created by Francis Kurkdjian, includes notes of Vanilla beans and muscs and is described on the brand’s website as follows:

Tihota means « Sugar » in Polynesian
When the skin is « sugar » under the Polynesian sun: it’s an exotic marriage of muscs in fusion and infusion with the sensual vanilla pods.
A vaporous wake but maintained, like the blow of a warm breeze that wraps the body and invades the atmosphere in a singular way.
Tihota is an olfactive and magical trip, the incandescence of the sunrise that embraces the far horizon.

My first spray was quite meagre, but the plush vanilla that hit my nostrils encouraged me to spray lavishly right away. Ah, this is what I am talking about – straight up vanilla. But at first it reminded me of several other perfumes and didn’t seem all that special – yet.

On my skin Tihota started to magically develop. It was as if the sumptuous, slightly sweet vanilla was morphing into the finest most delicate vanilla orchid plant right in front of my nose. I thought this stage was beautiful but it did not prepare me for what was to come. You see, I forgot about the perfume and after doing my chores I sat down and the first moment I had to myself had me huffing my wrist without shame. Wow! What was that? I could not pinpoint it at first.

So over the next few days I wore Tihota and basked in the warm vanilla eagerly awaiting to see what it was about the drydown that had me in a state of nirvana.

For the first few hours I bask in the warmth and imagine myself on a tropical island – walking amidst gardens overgrown with orchids of all varieties and colours but interspersed with vanilla orchids. After a while I find myself transported to another world. An Utopian world where there is only peace, love, lush colors in hues of gold, orange and red and most importantly warmth.

Then it dawned on me. It is the musk. The musky drydown gives me this feeling of glorious serenity. It is so well done. The vanilla and the musk intertwining into this cloud of heaven around me.

Thankfully the drydown is not overly sweet and makes me dream. In the final stages there is a slightly smoky/incensey powderiness that is enriched with the most delicate vanilla. This stage lasts for hours and into the next morning.

Dramatic Clouds above Plains at Sunset

Tihota is a gorgeous perfume worth every penny!

People In Perfumeland – Steven Verstraete Of Haute Parfumerie Place Vendome

Today I am happy to have Steven Verstraete of Haute Parfumerie Place Vendome in Weevelgem, Belgium, as a guest in the People In Perfumeland series.

Steven’s workplaces is a piece of heaven on earth for sure and a dream destination for every self-respecting Perfumista. Fortunately Place Vendome has an excellent mail order service if you are unable to visit this small Belgian city (just email them with your wishes) and aside from your exquisitely packaged fragrant treasure, Steven, his boss David Depuydt and their colleagues always add plenty of samples and gifts to make sure your shopping experience is a fantastic one.

I am a very happy customer of Place Vendome and so have been many of my friends and readers. So today we get a glimpse of the person behind the self-confessed Guerlain addict Steven Verstraete. Enjoy!

vendome 2

A good day starts with… a long shower… preferably with Eau Ressourcante shower cream by Clarins.

I’d never leave the house without… my iPhone or iPad… just imagine I would miss out on something. 😉

I always feel good when… the sun is shining in the morning and the birds sing their prettiest tune.

My favorite thing in the world is… my shower and iPad – but not together…

The next thing I want to buy is… a plane ticket to Brazil.

The place I always come back to is… Home, cause there is where my bathroom is… 😉

My personal style is… casual.

My favorite perfume… oooohh do you have a few hours.?  Lol… lately I seem to have fallen for Shalimar… but my first love was the late Voyageur from Jean Patou, I hope they will make it soon again… and the classic Yohji Yamamoto… and of course….

When I travel I always… make sure to have a travel size spray of Guerlain with me.

To relax I need… a hot bath or shower.

When I have a bad day… I am complaining like a small child that didn’t get what it wanted.

I like to gift people with… bath products.

I find my inspiration… in classic music… Philippe Jaroussky… heavenly!

Something I would never want to miss… is the child-like sense of wonder, when you are presented a scent for the first time.

My last mistake was… something quickly forgotten.

In my fridge there is always… bubbles (Ruinart is good enough).

On my nightstand I keep… hand cream by Clarins… the best!

The perfect weekend starts with… an early breakfast and a huge cup of coffee.

My role model is… not yet born… but I like the myth created around Gabrielle Chanel.

Something I always want to be asked in questionnaires like this is… What was your childhood dream?

steven verstraete

A bath, Ruinart champagne, a ticket to Brazil with a Guerlain travel spray in the bag? Sounds perfect to me!

I would have loved an answer to the last question Steven asks himself though. Maybe we’ll get it today in the comments?!

Vanessa of Bonkers About Perfume was lucky enough to meet Steven and visit the store in person, for further reading and photos, be sure to visit her “heavenly” post here. Victoria of Bois de Jasmin was just as lucky and took some stunning photos, see her post here.

Are you familiar with Place Vendome?

Monday Question – What’s New?

New Year, New You?

Are you planning on changing anything in your life this year?

Do you have resolutions?

Are you full of hope for the new year to bring about any changes you want, need, crave?

Or are you of the pessimistic sort, thinking that the more things change the more they stay the same?

question-mark

My Answer:

I am hopeful that a new year will bring about changes – for about a week. Things like: I’ll stay cool always with the kids, no more shouting. Or: I’ll become a minimalist all of a sudden, but only after I buy this pretty lipstick or three. Then our winter vacation is over, school starts again, work starts again, and things are squarely back to where they were before.

My family and I have a big change planned in our day to day lifestyles though, and that is a change of diet. I want to try bring us all on a better path of nutrition by trying to eat much, much less processed food and largely stick to a Whole Food concept. I want to avoid making a religion out of eating, but they way modern life wants us to eat is certainly highly questionable. I am a profoundly lazy person at heart, so this approach requires a lot of effort on my part. I hope to get addicted to good-for-me foods as much as I am to chocolate.

We’ll see how that goes… 🙂

On the perfume front I am still happily cruising along with three bottles (Chanel 28 La Pausa, Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles, Hermès Rose Ikebana).

What is new with you? Perfume-wise and in life in general?

In Search Of Hidden Beauty – Town Mouse And Country Mouse

I wanted to share a few photos from our recent vacation. The first three are in the country, the last two back in the city.

I love that we have the opportunity to experience both realms, I think it is a huge quality of life improvement to have the benefits of the city and those of country life.

We are both town mice and country mice. 🙂

photo 3 (1) photo 4 photo 5

The photos above are from a walk in the Pielachtal in Lower Austria.

photo 2 (3)This is my favorite hidden little street in the city, it is always quiet there and the shops have the most gorgeous displays. Most tourists miss this spot (which is why it stays quiet). 😉

This last one is from a cute app I found called MomentCam. It is a first class wish fulfillment opportunity for moments when you want to waste some time! Enjoy! 😉

Are you a town mouse or a country mouse?

Have a great weekend ahead!

People In Perfumeland – Tara Smith Of Olfactoria’s Travels

Today I am happy to give you a more personal view on Tara, my dear friend and co-writer on this blog. Tara lives in London and is therefore my eyes and ears on the ground for all the exciting perfume events happening in this city. Her reports of Perfume Lovers London evenings are so detailed we feel like we are there too, and in her reviews she shares touching and well written pieces of her perfumed life.

I first met Tara in London in 2011, she was the first reader I ever personally got to know and we hit it off right away. Tara is a wonderful person, kind, intelligent, very pretty and full of humour. My only complaint is that I cannot see her in person more often.

Tara and Bertrand

Tara and Bertrand Duchaufour in London

A good day starts with…

Feeling like I’ve had enough sleep. I’m one of those people who can sleep around the clock.

I’d never leave the house without…

Quite a lot of things as I tend carry my life around with me. Phone, keys, purse, tissues, notebook, anti-bac hand cleanser, hat, carrier bags and – for most of the year – an umbrella.

I always feel good when…

I am living in the moment. Not brooding over the past or fretting about the future.

My favorite thing in the world is…

Spending time with my niece who is four and a half and continually teaches me how to enjoy life and have fun.

The next thing I want to buy is…

Perfume-wise my current To Buy List includes Bois d’Encens by Armani Prive and Ambre Narguile and Eau de Mandarine Ambrée, both by Hermes.

The place I always come back to is…

My parents house in west London, where I grew up.

My personal style is…

Pretty feminine because I usually wear dresses, although I try to toughen it up with more masculine touches, like a leather jacket.

My favorite perfume…

Right now it’s Ormonde Woman by Ormonde Jayne but that changes with the weather.

When I travel, I…

Usually feel stressed but I love it when I arrive. Having a Kindle and iPod with me makes it easier.

To relax I need…

A good novel, peace and quiet, and my bed.

I like to gift people with…

A listening ear. It’s important to me that my friends and family know I’m always there to listen and give advice, if need be.

When I have a bad day, I…

Usually try to talk about it to someone, take a short walk or a nap and a long, hot bath.

I find my inspiration…

In perfume, books, art and people thriving against the odds.

Something I would never want to miss…

Those times when my family and I are all together in one room. That’s when I feel happiest and most content.

My last mistake was…

Worrying myself stupid about something that never happened.

In my fridge there is always…

Bramble jelly, cheese and soy sauce.

On my nightstand I keep…

An oil burner for diffusing essential oils, a lamp and my Kindle.

The perfect weekend starts with…

A long lie-in, breakfast in bed and something to look forward to.

My role model is…

You know, I’ve never really had a role model outside of my parents. I tend to be a bit of a magpie and pick up things from all sorts of people.

Something I always want to be asked in questionnaires like this is…

Can you share something nice that someone did for you recently?

A friend sent me a card the other day with the message “Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday …and everything is fine”. I think it was made for me. 🙂

Birgit, Tara, Vanessa and Thomas

Tara among similarly famous and fabulous people. (From left to right: yours truly, Tara Smith, Vanessa Musson of Bonkers About Perfume and The Candy Perfume Boy Thomas Dunckley.)

I can find myself in many things Tara mentions, and maybe that same outlook is what makes us good friends.

What makes a good friend for you? Do you tend to bond with people very much like you or do you gravitate towards people who have what you lack?

Happy 2014!

Just quickly checking in to wish you all a Happy New Year!

May all your dreams and hopes come a bit closer to coming true and stay or get healthy and content. Happiness is achieved only in moments, may there be plenty of those too.

We are still in the country until the 6th and enjoy the (relative) quiet here.
The farmer next door had twin calves on New Year’s Eve, the boys love them.

I hope you have a fabulous start into January, see you next week!

The Best Of 2013

To abuse a cliché everyone over the age of thirty or so uses this time of the year – the time flew by. This year really went by in a blink, and when I seemingly just the other day wrote about the highlights of 2012, it is this time of the year again when we look back and take stock.

The Boys salute you!

The Boys salute you!

Perfume-wise this was a very interesting year for me in the sense that I experienced an entirely new relationship with scent. The wild ride of testing, testing, testing lay behind me and the plethora of perfumes I knew, wrote about or owned left me exhausted and craving stability. So I gave in to this impulse and wore what I wanted and nothing else.

It turned out that what I wanted was to have two or three, four perfumes at the outside, that I rotated depending on my mood.

I realized that there is a huge difference between admiring, valueing and respecting a perfume and wanting to wear it on a daily basis. The huge majority of the residents of my perfume cabinet remained safely in there this year, only to be brought out and sniffed at from time to time, but rarely being worn. They are treasures, and like such, like expensive jewellery, like ball gowns, like high heeled shoes, I did not want to wear them daily, but I loved to look at them, admire them, smell them and put them back.

For the first time in many years I did not feel the need, the craving, the urge to smell new things. On the contrary, I was very reluctant to do so, because I enjoyed my new-found distance to perfume. I did not want to be drawn into the frenzied search, the mad dash for everything new again. The addicitve side of our hobby was a bit scary, so I enjoyed some peace and quiet with what I have, with the status quo, without needing more.

As you all know, this is not an ideal state of mind for perfume blogging, and this was the only thing that bugged me, not being able to write as many reviews as I used to. But I wrote different things, the interview series was well received I believe, and fortunately I can still think of things to ask you on Mondays. Thanks to my faithful contributors (Thank you again Tara, Sandra and Jordan!) things never came to a halt here on OT.

The few fragrances that did make an impression, that did cross my “no perfume, please!” barrier, were truly outstanding though. For me to get excited over a new perfume this year was a rare occasion and therefore I treasure these all the more.

So here come the new releases of the past year that made me happy, that I admired deeply and that are worthy of our attention.

Best New Perfumes Of 2013

bottles neela

Neela Vermeire Creations Ashoka: I am not alone in saying that the best new thing on the horizon the last few years was definitely NVC. All her perfumes made a splash and rightly so. The fourth release, the one to follow the huge successes of the first three, had big shoes to fill and great expectations to meet. In my opinion, Ashoka was the perfect follow-up to the India trio. Still with the theme (Neela’s India), but entirely different, it did not compete with its predecessors, but stands entirely on its own, incomparable, unique and touchingly beautiful. (Read Neela’s interview here.)

hedonist

Viktoria Minya Hedonist: Hedonist was a surprise out of nowhere. I think it was a fabulous start for this lovely young perfumer from Hungary (read her interview here). I am very curious to smell whatever comes next from her, and seeing my rather reluctant state of perfume curiosity, that is saying something.

hiram-green

Hiram Green Moonbloom: Another white floral that stole my heart this year, Moonbloom is a natural perfume with outstanding longevity and an inspiring beauty that touches me every time I return to it. That it has a devastatingly well designed bottle does not hurt at all. (Read the lovely Hiram’s interview here.)

Aftelier perfumes

Aftelier Cuir de Gardénia: This perfume is the one that came out the latest of the four on my list. It fell victim to my unfortunate writer’s block (or whatever it is that keeps me from just getting to it!), but only in the sense that I do not have a full review for it yet. I do intend to make it the first review I write in 2014, because it so deserves it. Mandy Aftel’s creations always have a deep impact on me (please read Mandy’s interview here). They definitely do not belong in the wear daily group of perfumes, but are rare gems to be treasured and enjoyed in tiny doses. Usually Mandy makes me hear music, be it Eminem or Astor Piazzolla. This perfume spoke in rhymes to my arid soul, momentarily depleted of creativity. The poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke offered itself up for a metaphor to explain the particular beauty of Cuir de Gardénia. O süßes Lied. If those two, Mandy and Rilke, will not get me wrtiting again, nothing will… Watch this space.

Most Worn Perfumes 2013

So finally we come to my most worn perfumes of the past year. I really wore these, as the photo will show.

photo (44)

First up my beloved J.-C. Ellena creation Number One: Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles. I am on my third, this one finally being the large size, bottle. I don’t know why, but I do not tire of this perfume, it just fits me like a glove and I not once have I regretted putting it on in the morning (or at night, at that).

Hermès Rose Ikebana, another J.-C. Ellena creation, is an old favorite that got back into regular use this year. I bought a bottle in January 2013 and finished that bottle in November. I have been missing it since. I was overjoyed to find it under the Christmas tree the other day and have been wearing it the past two days with extreme pleasure. Thankfully this is a scent my family unanimously adores and I keep getting compliments from friends and strangers on it, so I guess this is a keeper just like its stable mate above.

The house of Chanel always means luxury and elegance to me, and while I have been shunning N°5 completely this year, I found an extremely  trustworthy partner for days when everything else feels too much in Chanel Eau de Cologne. What Karl wears is definitely good enough for me…

Chanel 28 La Pausa was my first love from Les Exclusifs and my first favorite iris perfume. For years I procrastinated, thinking it was too fleeting, but in the end. beauty is just that. So why fight it? On a lovely shopping trip with Sandra and Val the Cookie Queen, I bought a bottle this December and I absolutely love it. It has immediately secured its place on my daily rotation tray and I am seriously thinking of stockpiling a big bottle, since discontinuation is rumoured (the Viennese SA thought it might not be discontinued in all countries?! If you know anything, please chime in!).

And finally there was one more perfume I wore a lot this year and I even used up the (albeit small) bottle: Jo Malone Blackberry&Bay. Unassuming, uncomplicated, happy and simply pretty, this is a very easy perfume to wear, but it still is unusual enough to stand out, and not only in the sea of mediocre Jo Malone fruity-florals, but in general. A very good perfume. Eventually I will return to it again, probably when the summer comes.

Phew, if you are still with me, I congratulate you and thank you for staying with me for 1250 words.

Uncharacteristically for me, I am writing this on the eve of publication, while normally the anal-retentive side of me commands that I write posts at least a week in advance. I actually enjoyed this laid back approach of just sitting down and writing (having no other choice, because I committed to this group posting). The pressure was on, but not in a bad way and I am happy that it felt easy again after a long time of finding no words.

You all know my wish for myself for 2014: for my muse, my drive, my joy to come back, for words to start pouring out again. I know I have to take it slow and these 1500 words felt like a good start.

I look forward to seeing you again next year. Thank you so much for your readership, you don’t know how much I appreciate it. Many hugs to you all.

Thank-You

But now to you! What did you love in 2013? What did you hate? What did you get for Christmas?

And finally, please take a look at the “Best of” lists of my fellow bloggers today:

People In Perfumeland – Jordan River Of The Fragrant Man

Screen Shot 2013-12-11 at 5.49.58 PM

Once upon a time Jordan River was a shy lurker who one day decided to comment on one of my Monday Questions. The comment became so long he emailed it to me and it became a guest post here called Indefensible Amounts of Beauty. He thinks that I am like an airport; he landed on me and took off! A month after that Jordan launched his website called The Fragrant Man on Valentines Day this year. As well as writing for Olfactoria’s Travels and Australian Perfume Junkies he is a Basenotes contributor for whom he recently covered the first Australian album sandalwood harvest (Mysore sandalwood grown in Australia).

A good day starts with a carafe of coffee. I had hoped to be highly influenced by Mandy Aftel’s answer here which was “a pot of oolong tea” but, no, I tried, and coffee it is. I drink the whole plunge which is why I call it a carafe.

Good Morning Perfumistas, have a great day ahead!

I’d never leave the house without fin de siècle Christian Dior sunglasses, usually blue, sometimes purple and occasionally rose-tinted Bulgari’s when the world needs to be looked at through such lenses.

My personal style is
Work – suit, shirt, tie and belt, all from Thierry Mugler (unfortunately I do not like the fragrances) with Cesare Paciotti shoes or boots.

Casual – 3/4 length shorts with 1 of 14 similar (but differentiated by detail) made-to-measure white linen shirts – this makes getting dressed very easy. More time to contemplate the SotD.

My beloved perfume was Lalique’s Encre Noir.
Now I have to add an ‘s’: Jubiliation XXV, Memoir Man, both from Amouage, Nasomatto’s Black Afgano, Mohur, the masterpiece that is Trayee, both from Neela Vermeire Creations, La Labo’s man rose, Rose 31 and Ensar Oud oils.

My beloved 2013 releases are Neela Vermerie Creations Ashoka, Pure Distance BLACK, Amouage Fate Man, and Le Labo Cuir 28. The showgirl that is Zelda is a potent perfume; a magnolia that I wear on special occasions.

My beloved natural perfume is the original and potent Cuir de Gardenia extrait by Alchemist Mandy Aftel. This ‘fume gave me An Olfactory Orgasm.

On Christmas Eve I will be wafting Ma Folie de Noel from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Christmas Day will be Spiced Citrus Vetiver by Sonoma Scent Studio.

When I travel, I pack extra-light; carry-on luggage only for ease and speed of movement. No waiting at the luggage carousal.

Let's go

To relax I need either silence or green gardens. Preferably both. This one is my friend’s garden in Chiang Mai.

On my nightstand I keep the Psalms, the iPad (which contains my Kindle library) and sleep scents. The sleep scents are Mohur and Trayee. This sleep scent concept seemed way too ‘out there’ to me when I first came across it while gazing into Undina’s Looking Glass. But as smell has an immediate brain connection I have found that these two scents do give the sweetest dreams.

The perfect weekend starts with making hummus as a toast spreader for the rest of the weekend.

Some things I have always wanted to be asked in questionnaires like this is…

Do you have a quote or two, a book, a painting and a song to share?

As it happens I do, Olfactoria…

A thousand half-loves must be forsaken to take one whole heart home.

– Rumi

Those words helped me choose one partner, rather than one a weekend. My partner is a war refugee from the ‘Pol Pot time’ in Cambodia who escaped jail, walked over the mountains to Thailand, then lived in a refugee camp before been sponsored by a church to come to New Zealand. 8 years later the Dad and 5 siblings were found scattered across Vietnam. They were reunited in NZ (although some remain missing) and they now all live close to each other.
