In this week’s edition of People in Perfumeland I am happy to welcome Hiram Green.
Hiram is a perfumer currently living and working in Holland. He founded Scent Systems, a perfumery in London. What he missed in the perfume market was high quality natural scents, so he decided to make one himself. (There are high quality natural perfume lines of course, Aftelier in the US, April Aromatics in Europe for instance, but we are open to welcome another. 🙂 ).
His first perfume is called Moon Bloom, an all-natural tuberose-centered fragrance in a fabulous bottle (and there is a perfumista-friendly travel size available as well!). Expect my review of Moon Bloom soon, here is Tom’s on PST.
But first let us get to know the man behind this new brand a bit better:
A good day starts with… coffee.
I’d never leave the house without… my wallet and keys, boring but true.
I always feel good when… I smell good.
My favorite thing in the world is… at the moment I would have to say it is my new home.
The next thing I want to buy is… some furniture for my new home.
The place I always come back to is… London.
My personal style is… I try to look smart casual, but I think it may come across more as the nutty professor.
My favorite perfume… is Hermès Eau d’Orange Verte.
When I travel, I… like to immerse myself in the local culture.
To relax I need… not much. I try to stay relaxed as much as possible.
I like to gift people with… something that they would never expect.
When I have a bad day, I… try to avoid bad days, if it happens I go for a walk to clear my minds.
I find my inspiration… often listening to music.
Something I would never want to miss… Since moving to the Netherlands I have really gotten into bicycling through the Dutch countryside. I would not want to give that up.
My last mistake was… There was a chandelier for sale in the local bric-a-brac market last week. The seller offered it to me for only €5 and still I did not buy it. What a mistake. It would have looked great in my dining room.
In my fridge there is always… cheese, I live in Gouda.
On my nightstand I keep… a bunch of magazines and art books.
The perfect weekend starts with… the sun shining and coffee on my roof top garden.
My role model is… Peter Pan.
I admire Hiram for his relaxed attitude, I could really use some of that inner calm. I guess it comes with the territory when Peter Pan is your role model.
And isn’t it lovely that he does his duty as a citizen of Gouda by always having cheese in the fridge?
Did you try Moon Bloom? Are you curious?
Love the answer with Peter Pan. I am definitely going to try this one.
I’m sure you’ll love Moon Bloom.
It’s so nice, to find out more about Hiram! I own Oeillet and Rose from Scent Systems and Oeillet is the best carnation scent I’ve ever smelled. Therefore, of course, I was very curious about Moon Bloom and ordered it right away without trying first. It is such a gorgeous, tender Tuberose scent, slightly milky with a bright and happy feel. It only doesn’t last long, unfortunately. At least on my skin. So although I usually never do that, I spray a bit extra on my clothes, when I am wearing it.
It doesn’t last very long on me either, but that is to be expected with a naturals only scent unfortunately.
Glad to hear spraying it on clothes works well.
He seems like a real easy-going guy. Not stuffy or high maintenance at all. I like that in a person. I haven’t tried any of his perfumes but I will be on the lookout for them. Am I imagining it or have a lot of perfume people in this series also been cheese lovers?
Haha, no you are right, poodle. There is a disproportionally large percentage of cheese lovers among the people interviewed here. Coincidence?
We must ask Undina to work her statistical magic on it. 😉
This is such a fun way to find out about little known or new brands. Hiram sounds great and I love his attitude too.
I agree that Peter Pan is a wonderful role model!
Thank you, Tara!
Hiram inspired me to re-read Peter Pan with the boys the other night. Even though they are very, very afraid of Hook and the crocodile, they love that story. 🙂
How lovely! I’m really enjoying reading to Mia. She loves Mrs Pepperpot at the moment.
Must investigate Mrs Pepperpot, the book is not known here. Thanks for the tip.
It’s about a little old lady who shrinks to the size of a pepper pot. The boys may be a little old for it but see what you think.
Mrs Pepperpot! I’m amazed but thrilled to know that she is still around and being read to kids today. She was one of my faves when I was a child and thats 50 years ago! Now I want to find one of stories and take a trip down memorylane 🙂
I found German translation books of Mrs Pepperpot from the 1970s. 🙂
As always, I enjoy this series and thank you for featuring it, Birgit. I would love to try Moon Bloom, just based on Hiram’s answers. I like how music is often his inspiration. Maybe perfume people love cheese because it hits all the sensory buttons, the smell/taste/feel – what’s better than melty delicious cheese, except chocolate? Obviously time for lunch 🙂
Time for dinner over here, but details aside, I’m so with you… 😉
Cheese and Peter Pan! I’m inspired to forget about cholesterol and just have a good time. Life is too short to grow up! I am very curious about Moon Bloom.
So true, Azar! Life should be enjoyed.
Moon Bloom is a beauty.
Moon Bloom is such a great name – you have to enunciate it really carefully…
And I would like to know if Hiram’s Gouda is the vintage sort that is a wonderful deep orange, like Mimolette. That is my favourite kind.
The name matches the perfume beautifully.
Aged Gouda is my favorite too. 🙂
“I try to look smart casual, but I think it may come across more as the nutty professor.” best line. I love it when people can honestly have a jab at themselves. Hiram reads very cool.
Thanks again Birgit, these are always fun.
I love that line too, makes him so likeable. 🙂
haha- I love the nutty professor line too!
I like how honest his answers are- like the wallet and the keys..:)
Ah- cheese. I think I could live on cheese..:D
I read about Moon Bloom on Victoria’s (eaumg.net) blog and thought it sounded lovely..Can’t wait to hear what you think of it.
You’ll hear it today. 🙂
Interestingly a big number of perfumistas are cheese lovers as well.

Lovely interview and a great fragrance! And I know what he means with riding a bike in Holland, I couldn’t live without my bike 😉
Holland must be a lovely country!
