Amber is a note I love. There are many ambers in my arsenal and each one has its special properties. More or less sweet, more or less strong, more or less dark, more or less dry…
Anya’s Garden Amberess is my first natural amber, so I was very curious and not sure what to expect. Amberess is, to me, a herbal amber. Amber shot through with aromatic, almost spicy threads, like inclusions in amber, the stone. It is interesting and very different from the ambers I know. But let us start at the beginning:
“Rare musk rose from Africa opens this soft, lush amber perfume. Ten carefully-blended base notes provide a gorgeous amber base that melts into your skin.”

Amberess was part of the Outlaw Project and therefore includes notes of Zambian Princesse de Nassau Rosa Moschata, African musk rose otto and musk rose absolute, Madagascan ylang ylang, South African rose geranium, Indonesian patchouli, Himalayan amber oil, Turkish styrax, Greek labdanum, Peruvian tonka bean, Salvadorean balsam tolu, Balsam of Peru, Chinese benzoin and Madagascan vanilla, many of which are untested, prohibited or limited aromatics.
Amberess has no top notes and starts with a lush rose on a bed of softest amber. It feels very dense, layer upon layer, no spaces in between. A full and fully opened rose, a day away from wilting, she gives her last and her beauty is tragic for we know it must end soon. The soft ambery cushion the rose is lying upon, is rich in tonka, vanilla and labdanum, making it sweet and soft, but also the slightly sharp edges of peru balsam and the smokiness of benzoin lurk underneath and make themselves felt.
Amberess is a powerful thing. It makes me inexplicably sad. It is beautiful, and in its beauty I sense a feeling of despair, of doom. At the same time it provides solace. Its plushness and downy softness offer a place to lie down and take the time to be sad, to cry, to mourn and then to heal.
Amberess resonates with me, it strikes a chord deep down, like the c string of a contra bass being plucked and taking a long time to return to silence.
Therefore I would not want to wear it just any day, it is a special perfume for special times.
On a more prosaic note – I have a complete sample set of Anya’s Garden perfumes courtesy of Anya McCoy to give away. Ten samples of 0.5ml pure perfume each, for one lucky winner to try! Samples include Amberess and Light and many other wonderful natural perfumes.

Would be very interested in that one – it’s pretty difficult to get my paws on any Anya’s Garden scent on this side of the Earth. Natural parfums – if they’re made well – always play stronger with one’s feelings (well, at least they do so with me)

So far, I have tried and loved quite a few ambery fragrances: Laura Mercier’s Ambre Passion, Annick Goutal’s Ambre Fetiche (one of my favourites), L’Orientaliste’s Ambre, Serge Luten’s Ambre Sultan (a reference in the genre) and George Sand by Histoire de Parfums, of which I have sadly run out!
All the ambers you mention are great, I have never tried George Sand though. Must correct that asap.

I’ve never been a fan of amber, but after reading several reviews of Ambre Fetiche (including yours), I decided to give it another chance last week. And I fell completely in love, wore it three days in a row, sniffing my arm all the time. I need a bottle!
Now I have to try all the ambers I have dismissed earlier, and order a lot of samples… I’ve already fallen for Mitzah and L’Eau d’Ambre, so now I need to test Ambre Sultan, Ambre Russe and the one from Mona di Orio.

Amber tends to bloom in the heat and can get a bit stifling or overwhelming, but that is up to personal preference of course.

Amber is not usually something I would look for in a perfume but after reading some of your beautiful reviews on many amber perfumes I decided to open my mind and give amber another a try, you have insprired me to order a sample of Parfum d’Empire Ambre Russe to quote your phrase “Yummy amber, dirty – Ha!” that appealed to me on many levels, out of all the parfum d’empire samples that I orderd this is the one that I look forward to smelling the most.
Your new review for Anya’s garden also sounds like a very special perfume, one that my newly opened mind would love to try.

The smell of amber takes me back to my early teens in the 1970’s. In the local shopping mall,there was a wondeful little indian clothing shop.Apart from the wonderful hippie type clothes made of cheesecloth with their colourful embroidery and shiny decorations,there was a stand full of natural perfumes essences in tiny bottles.I remember these well as I spent many hours smelling the substances from these tiny little bottles.I remember the one with the amber oil very well.It had an insense like,resinous,soft,sweet,deep and woody smell with a rich toffee/fudge like colour.It a was pleasurable to smell and it drew me into that shop over and over again as it always calmed me.
My more up to date experiences with amber are in L Eau Ambree by Prada,but this is more complex than the beautiful ,natural oil that I loved in the 70’s
Just thinking about that smell transports me back in time to my teenage years.I would love to try Anyas Garden Amberess and the other natural fragrance samples,which are not available in South Africa.

Hi, I would love to be included in the draw, I´m very curious to try Anyas scents. One amber I love is Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan. It´s only that I´ve never smelled it on myself, just on others, but I love it nonetheless. I have at least one friend that just “glows” in it, if you can say that about a scent.

Ambre Sultan is simply perfect. I am wearing a little spritz of it right now on my hand (it is too hot for the full treatment) just to get a whiff of it now and again. 😉
It’s tough to pick a favorite… I love ambers whether they verge from dry, slightly bitter, to wet and sweet I love them all, especially at bedtime~ One amber I found simply lovely recently was Laboratorio Olfattivo Alambar… yummy!
Ambers are my favorite sleep scents as well.
I have heard many good things about Laboratorio Olfattivo.
Unfortunately I haven`t tried Anya`s natural perfumes yet. But I read so many wonderful things about them that I`d love to try them.
Thanks for this review, it opened my eyes that I need to deepen my knowledge about amber. A lot of amber perfume are waiting for me, and I would like to discovery all of them, including Anya`s.

This is why I read perfume blogs – I’m still not able to conjure up a scent memory that I can label “Amber” for certain. I’ve got perfumes with labdanum and resins in them and I’ve bought essential oils of the usual suspects too, but there’s no clear association with “Amber” compared to, for example, “Rose”. So much to learn!
Your description of “Ambress” put me in mind of the live recordings of Peter Green performing “Jumping at Shadows” – beautiful and tragic.
I just listened to Peter Green, so beautiful. The heavy bass line is a perfect simile to how I feel Amberess resonating with me. Thank you for the tip!

I recently got to try Sonoma Scent Studio’s Incense Pure, and it may become my favorite incense amber. My long time fave is Chaos/Anarchy, which has lots of spice and labdanum. The only perfume of Anya’s I’ve tried is Kewdra, which is very unique and compelling.
Incense Pure is beautiful.
Amber is probably my favourite note, as I am the ultimate oriental-gourmandist (a real Schleckkatze!)… I find it a very warm note and the best basenote because it gives a soothing second-skin vibe on my skin…
One of my favourite perfumes is Ambre Sultan, which I find very sexy. Ambre Fétiche on the other hand, is the opposite, it reminds me of the smell of wooden toys from when I used to go to my grandma’s in Stuttgart. It also smelt better on paper, as it tends a bit too much towards the incense. I find Ambre Russe very similar to what AF smelt like on paper.
As a last mention, it surprised me how different the amber oils they have in Morocco (where I travelled a few weeks ago) smell compared to what we know as amber in Europe. Kind of more fruity, less lush…
It must be great smelling all these oils and attars in a Moroocan souk. A Lutensian moment, I bet. 😉

A beautiful review, B. I love that you are willing to embrace the melancholy yet find comfort in it. Last week, my therapist spoke about that very thing – how one can heal and grow by accepting sadness. Through that acceptance (“not passivity” she reminded me) we can find comfort. I always enjoy your music/perfume parallels. The bass is one of my favorite instruments – it’s sound goes straight to my heart!
I love amber. My favorite straight-up amber is Spanish Amber by Pacifica. It’s a little screechy when first sprayed, but it calms down quick. It’s got a “freshly sharpened pencil” note that I just love! Also, it’s dirt cheap. What’s not to like?
Ambre Sultan is another I quite like – not so cheap, the Lutens…

I hav a tricky relationship with amber- in theory I love the note, but find it sometimes difficult to wear- e.g Andy’s Morocain..
I have been testing Puredistance M which smells ambery- I’m especially loving the middle and drydown of this perfume..
M is a great amber! My husband wears it and so do I. Amber can be diffcult to wear sometimes, but when it works, it really works! 🙂

For those who don’t like/can’t wear amber: I created Amberess for myself, because I fit into that category! Body chemistry does play a big role. Still, if you love amber, you will love this. Also, if you crave the exotic, the rarely-used essences, the two musk rose extracts, and the true amber essence from the Himalayas will fix that craving.

I love the earthy warmth of Amber , my favourite is Dr Vranje’s Amber and Iris ( a personal fragrance not room scent ). I also think gres Ambre is good for such a low price . It goes so well with roses so I am almost bound to love it .

I would love to be entered in the draw. I am drawn to Amber fragrances but I am still exploring to find the one that really sings to me. I’m casting my net far and wide to include spicy ambers, woody ambers, floral ambers, powdery ambers, masculine and feminine, light or heavy. I’m wondering if it might be better to search in cooler weather when I am longing for something warm and comforting, but it’s still such a compelling scent that I would want to smell any time of the year.

I prefer wearing ambers in fall and winter, but sometimes I get a craving for its comforting complexitiy and then I give in to that, irrespective of the weather. To find your perfect amber it might be better to wait until temperatures fall again, maybe.

My favorite amber so far has to be Cuir Ambre from the Prada Exclusive line. It is very warm and comforting and yet not unbearably sweet – it is wonderfully long wearing as well, a good 8 hours on my skin. If I want a sweet amber I turn to Ambre Fetiche. I don’t really have a favorite amber perfume right now, but use to use a skin safe amber perfume oil when I made soap and loved it. It would mix so nicely with sandalwood perfume oil. I quit making soap and took a break from scents & perfumes for a while so am rediscovering and finding so many new perfumes now. It’s fun and a little overwhelming too. Would love to try Anya’s Garden scents, your description of Amberess is compelling, very curious now. I may need to sample Annick Goutal’s Ambre Fetiche & Armani Privé Ambre Orient too, they sound appealing too, adding to my list 🙂

Amber – glorious amber, one of my favourite aromas although each time I enjoy it, I am more mystified and baffled by the complex blend of aromas it offers.
I have a velvet, sweet haunting amber saturating in grain alcohol at present. Even though I know I should leave it alone for just a couple more weeks, it is almost temptation beyond endurance. I have high expectations of the elixir to come!
The amber is intensely sweet with a dark honey edge to it. I can detect soft wisps of rich woody notes and yet there is a hint of floral somehow entwined in there.

I would love to try Anya’s perfumes, I’ve haven’t had a chance to try natural perfumes yet. Ambre Narguile is a favorite of mine, also I recently got my hands on a sample of 1804 George Sand and it’s truly lovely. Sadly the sample is almost gone, I’ll have to order a full bottle soon!
The good thing is Histoires de Parfum offers 30ml bottles, only in the US for now, as far as I know though. But there is hope that they will pop up over here sooner or later as well.

When dating my now husband, he always wore a smudge of amber resin on his pulse points. So, amber reminds me of love and romance.

My ambre favourites are Ambre Fetiche – Annick Goutal (sorry for the repetition but it’s addictive…), Ambre – L’Occitane en Provence and Roma – Laura Biagiotti. The smokey darkness of Ambre Fetiche, the honeyed sweetness of L’Occitane’s Ambre, and the citrus-piney freshness of Roma are the impressions I love about these perfumes.

This actually sounds quite nice. My favorite amber by far is Ambre Sultan, mostly because my wife loves to smell it on me! Many of my favorites do involve amber in some way, though not always as the dominant theme or note. I don’t know that I’ve smelled a natural amber, so I’m intrigued by this one. Especially since it’s an Outlaw.

Honestly, I am a little confused about amber. It can come from different sources. Like very old tree resin, a mix of different resins and essential oils, and from sperm whale vomit. But I am not confused about how comforting amber feels – like a favorite pair of warm slippers in winter. Warm. Soft. Welcoming.
Amber is confusing, because there is no such thing as amber, it is always a combination of materials, and then there is ambergris, the natural whale excretion. But as you say, whatever it is, it smells gorgeous.

There IS a true amber, and it’s in Amberess. Will of Eden Botanicals found a source in the Himilayas. They are distilling the amber chunks, the true fossilized tree resin. He was the first to import it and make it available commercially. It is an incredibly deep, warm, plastic-y, resinous scent.
Of course! Thank you for pointing it out Anya! That is probably part of the special, deep and dark appeal Amberess has.
I am new to Amber (and to perfume connoisseurship in general) but with all the evocative visions I keep reading I imagine a perfect velvet perfume blanket for an incense lover like me…

Amber is the one note that I can never have too many of. I blame this on coming of age in the 1970s, also have fond memories of those Indian gauze blouses we all wore back then and the way the import shops smelled. I think my favorite among the ambers I have would be a tie between Yves Rocher Voile d’Ambre and Balmain Ambre Gris. Even in the heat/humidity of Florida, my ambers are in constant rotation. Would love to smell Anya’s creations, thanks for the draw.

All the comments are great! I have learned so much. I am exicted to smell an all natural perfume with Amber in it. My first experiences with Amber take me back to my youthful days wandering around Berkeley California. I think one of the reasons I gravitated towards those streets were indeed the smells. My young confused and distraught emotions/soul craved those times. I remember buying those little carved wooden boxes and I could just die and go to heaven. It seemed that all of those negative feelings just went away and in came the sunshine. Wow ! My mouth is just drooling right now for one of those little boxes. I’m not familiar with MOST name brand perfumes because I am very cautious about synthectic molecules. Anya seems to have a very reputable reputaion for all natural ingredients. I would love to sample her stuff. I work a lot with essential oils and have thought that I would love to experiment sometime with perfume making. My soul is enraptured with natural scent.

What a great name for a perfume – Amberess. Overtones of tigress and empress. And I really empathize with your highly emotional response to scents….that’s why I love perfume so much. It can ground me, uplift me, make me reflective, give me energy, depending on what I apply that day.

Well, I really love the Ambre Narguile, but I have not got a bottle yet. I’m kind of hoping that some will show up at ebay to a descent price. My boyfriend’s favorite is Profumum Fiori d’Ambra. It´s actually the only perfume he owns and he is not interested in anything else 🙂

I haven’t paid a lot of attention to amber…but upon reviewing notes for some of my favorites (DSH’s Ashram, Inner Sanctum, & Prophecy, for example), I find it everywhere! And I recently discovered something called Sudanese Amber by Daphne’s Natural Oils–really rich & sweet.
Once you start looking for it, Amber pops up everywhere. 😉 Sudanese Amber sounds great, will investigate.

I also first met amber in those Indian import shops during the ’70s. I’d get the little wooden or soapstone boxes and put them in my dresser drawers to scent my clothes. Yum! One of my Indian coworkers wears the same kind of scent and it always evokes that time for me. My favorite amber perfumes now are Aromatics Elixir by Clinique and The Miller’s Daughter from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (sadly discontinued). I don’t know how many people would classify AE as an amber, but on me it really comes out in the drydown, entangled with sandalwood and patchouli. The Miller’s Daughter is a rose amber with hay and salt – very lovely to me. Since it has been discontinued I’m looking for another rose amber.

I love amber. It is so exotic in its associations but somehow very comforting as well. My favorite is at this time Ambre Fetiche — so herbal and buttery… truly capable of warming my whole being.
AF is one of my favorites too. Your description of it is beautiful.
Amber is a difficult note for me, Ambre Sultan being my absolute amber nightmare, not because I find it ugly but it wakes up a lot of sad feelings. I do love Ambre Precieux though and I have found a very pleasing way to wear amber in Montale Patchouli Leaves. Bone dry patchouli on a base of amber and vanilla. It seems that somehow vanilla has a redeeming quality for amber in my book.
Amber and vanilla is a wonderfully comforting combination. I should try the Montale sometime.
Amber is an easy to love note for me, this is where I started my perfume explorations in the Fall/Winter of 2009 and it worked beautifully for the season! I tried many ambers then and I am always open to try more. The only amber I did not like in my early perfumista time was Ambre Sultan, but now I have rediscovered it and love it too — however, my secret to it is dabbing in homeopathic doses. I am not sure I have a favorite amber perfume yet, but I have a little stash full of amber samples for the time when the days get shorter and I start craving my Fall foods 🙂
I think we agree on the fact that there can never be enough ambers. 😉

What a beautiful description of Amberess! I would love to experience all of Anya’s perfumes as I have heard only good things about them. Amber scents are my fall/winter staple – so sexy, yet warm and comforting at the same time.
