Olfactoria On The Road – London Day Three

Yesterday Harrods with all its fragrant delights was on my schedule.
First my friend E. and I went to the fifth floor where Roja Dove’s Haute Parfumerie is located.
A beautiful boutique filled to the brim with the best of the best, selected, or I am almost tempted to say, curated, since it has a bit of a museum-feel to it, by Roja Dove.
We had the pleasure to chat with the store manager Anette Nejad, who is a very nice and exuberant person, who has a palpable passion for perfume.
I inquired especially after the MCDI (further testing is needed, nothing stood out in particular) and Xerjoff (love Irisss, no surprise there) lines, since I do not have access to these at home and tried the Roja Dove perfumes as well. Of the three regular ones, I liked Unspoken best. The semi-bespoke fragrances are interesting, there is a contingent of 50 bottles per scent, and once these are sold, the formula is retired. The owners of those 50 bottles can always have more of course, but it can not be bought any longer by anybody else. 50ml go for 1000£.

After that intense sniffing session, I went on to meet a lovely reader of Olfactoria’s Travels (Hi Tara!) and together we took a stroll through the perfume hall of Harrods which is great. There are the exclusive Guerlains, we made our way through them and I finally got a sample of Opus V at the Amouage counter, where I wish now I had stayed longer to smell all the attars.

Later in the evening I went to a Gallery opening of a contemporary art show called Down to Earth. I liked the pieces shown quite a lot more than I expected.
We had dinner at an Indian restaurant and ended the evening at the Martini bar at our hotel, where Sir Ian Fleming got the inspiration for his hero’s drink preferences, “shaken not stirred”. 🙂

Today the intense sniffing action of the prior days was paused, primarily due to my slightly delicate state (see yesterday evenings activities), but I look forward to a evening appointment at L’Artisan Parfumeur.
So stay tuned!

Picture Perfect – Perfume Portrait At Ormonde Jayne

I was a bit nervous when I entered Ormonde Jayne’s Mayfair boutique on Monday, but a soon as I introduced myself to the lovely Natalie, store manager and utterly lovely person, I was at ease and ready to enjoy the experience. The store itself is diminuitive, but beautiful. All black and glossy, the pretty OJ perfumes, candles and body products are artfully displayed throughout.

Natalie settled me on a barstool and proceeded with the perfume portrait. This is a complimentary service they offer, to ease the process of choosing a perfect scent, either as a signature fragrance or for a specific purpose, for instance choosing a new summer fragrance.

Since I am familiar with most of the OJ perfumes, for me it was a great way to narrow down my choices, since I am, sadly, unable to purchase the entire line, although I sure would if I could. 😉

Natalie started with a few questions after my personal preferences and then proceeded to let me smell raw essential oils. From the lightest – hesperidics, on to florals, woods and resins to to the atmospheric category, that held oils like pink pepper or ambroxan.

I had to declare my like or dislike of each and that was noted in my chart. With that information Natalie recommended four scents, in my case Ta’if, Frangipani, Sampaquita and Orris Noir. She also had Tolu on her list, but I ruled that out beforehand since I already own a bottle, so I know I love this one.

In the end I was able to choose two, Ta’if and Frangipani, beause Natalie handed me one bottle as a gift with best wishes from Linda Pilkington. Such a generous and lovely gesture! Thank you so much!Very happy with my new perfumes (the new packaging is indeed red, not bright orange any longer, also the box looks a bit different, but I like the new design as well.), I left the boutique.

For anyone based in or visiting London, I can highly recommend to take a shot at having your perfume portrait taken. The store keeps a record of the answers for further reference, so it is a breeze sending a man off to get a gift, for example, he won’t get it wrong that way! 😉

As for all your questions, and my own as well: Linda granted me the opportunity for an interview by phone or email, at which point I will ask her all we want to know!

Just a tidbit for now, there are indeed expansion plans underway…;)

What The World Needs Now – Review: Swarovski Aura

Swarovksi released (in broadest possible distribution) its first fragrance, called Aura on April 1. (April’s Fools Day? A possible sign?)

Dutiful (and curious) blogger that I am, I went to the flagship store in Vienna on the first day of availability to have a sniff and beg for a sample. And beg I had to, one would think that to get people interested, giving out a sample would not be considered too much or untoward in any way. Not so. The good man at the Swarovski store looked  at me as if I had asked him for a little crystal chandelier or two to take home.

Rolling his eyes at my greed and audacitiy and obvious unwillingness to buy a 100ml bottle unsniffed, he parted with a sprayed card only at first. I am rather meek normally, but if somebody behaves like that, I get furious. Suffice to say I walked out of the store with two samples clutched in my triumphantly raised fist, my mad cackling still filling the cavernous store… (Yeah, right. But I did indeed walk away with two samples.)

After this unfortunate, and from a marketing standpoint rather stupid display of retail failure, I was still determined to give Aura a fair run. As fair as a jaded Perfumista can be in any case…

It is pink for one. Not promising. The tagline is “the grace of light”. Okay, why not.

First sniff: Surprise!!! A fruity floral awaits.

People, this is what you all have been waiting for! Unprecedented fruity floral, rather pleasant if deeply, deeply unoriginal top notes of sugared berries and a sheer flower bouquet, fade into indistinct and watery, clean white musk and vanilla drydown. Yay!

So if you have nothing like this in your collection, why wait any longer?

The practical thing about this proliferation of identical smelling pink fragrances is that you can start choosing your “perfume” solely based on the bottle design. Thankfully Swarovski put some money into the packaging, and they offer a variety of sizes, which is highly commendable. The price is okay too. Thankfully it does not last that long on skin as it does on paper. On skin this is one problem that solves itself.

All good, no?

The pink aura projected by Aura is one of perfect assimilation. It is the BORG of perfume. The thirtyseventh drone from the right.

That is how I want to present myself to the world. Yeah, right.

Olfactoria on The Road – London Day Two

I am so tired!
In perfect, untypically bright and sunny weather my friend, who lives in London and I went about sniffing to our hearts content today.

We started out at Les Senteurs at Elizabeth Street in Belgravia. I knew the online store they run and in my imagination Les Sentuers was a huge place full of perfume. They have a lot of fragrances, but huge it is not by any standards. I also was rather surprised to see that they do not carry as many lines as Le Parfum in Vienna.
The SA’s are very friendly, relaxed and let us spray as much as we liked and willingly made samples to take home.
A lovely experience.

After lunch we went on to the Amouage flagship store in Lowndes Street. Such a beautiful venue, elegant and lavishly decorated, as befits the brands aesthetic. I sniffed the new Opus V, as well as Opus IV, which I had not tested before either. Sadly they were out of samples, so I hope to get some at Harrods tomorrow.

On we went to Ormonde Jayne. More about my lovely experience there with the friendly and knowledgeable store manager Natalie (including pictures) is upcoming in the next days.

Finally we went to Selfridges. I bought a bottle of Mitzah from an astounded French SA, who couldn’t believe I already knew the perfume and obtained a sample from somewhere else than Paris, the unholy US no less (his expression suggested that thought).
The beauty and fragrance hall is huge and a bit overwhelming. Also I find it a bit disconcerting to see Serge Lutens bottles standing next to Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau so Fresh. Apart from that sacrilege, there are certainly treasures to be found there. No Amouage Opus V sample though, sadly.
What looked great where the displays of Tom Ford Neroli Portofino in its new summer, turquoise dress with matching body products. I like the scent, but it is overpriced for something so straightforward. There are many Neroli scents far cheaper than this, even if it looks pretty, I am not seduced (this time).

Finally, with a headache as big as Mount Everest, I headed home for a hot bath, paracetamol and my iPad, which brings us up to the moment.

Tonight we are going to an exclusive, members only club, courtesy of my husbands best man, who obviously did well for himself in London.
SotE will be Frapin 1697.

See you tomorrow! 🙂

Monday Question – What Is Your Ideal Perfume-Shopping Destination?

Since I am in London this week, the Monday question is: Where do you want to shop for perfume?

What is the best city?

What is your dream destination when it comes to immersing yourself in as much perfume as possible?

My Answer:

It is NOT Copenhagen! 🙂 If Tarleisio is to be believed, and she is of course, Scandinavia is the worst place to go looking for perfume, it seems even New Mexico is better in that respect (that is home to the Posh Peasant after all!)

Paris seems to be the obvious answer, and I want to go there for sure, but despite Maison Guerlain, despite the Salons de Palais Royal Shiseido, despite the entire Champs Elysées, I prefer New York. You find everything in New York, the dollar means a bargain for Europeans (most of the time) and I speak the language. My school French is abysmal and I don’t feel my best if I can’t follow the conversation.

And what about London? I have been many times, and enjoyed it every time, it is only two hours flight away, but the reason it is not at the top spot is simply the exchange rate. The pound is not friendly and everything costs a lot.

I am looking forward to hear about your dream perfume cities!

I will be reporting “live” from my week in the UK, so stay tuned.

Have a great start into your week!

Olfactoria On The Road – London Day One

I landed in London this afternoon to extraordinarily beautiful, unseasonally warm weather.
We checked in at the lovely Dukes Hotel in St James
After unpacking M (my husband) and I went to a pub to meet our friends, who live here.
It was so warm we could sit outside and enjoyed a lovely dinner.
Lots of Pimm’s was consumed and fun was had by all. 😉
Since we were near, I went by Les Senteurs in Elizabeth Street, sadly closed of course and pressed my nose to the glass windows. Somehow I was expecting a very much larger store, but it looks lovely and will be inspected closely tomorrow during opening hours.

Upon coming back to the hotel there were two surprises waiting for me:
First a message saying that the course I am here to attend will not start tomorrow as planned, but had to be postponed to Tuesday. Well, that gives me more free time, which is fine.
The other news was an email by Sarah, of Ormonde Jayne.
Sadly Linda Pilkington had to cancel my appointment, since there were unexpected troubles that would keep her from coming to the store tomorrow. I was so disappointed!
All your questions, everything I wanted to ask….sigh, not to be.
I will still have my perfume portrait taken by the store manager Natalie, and I look forward to that. Of course I will write about it.
Hopefully I will be able to do my interview with Ms Pilkington through email soon.

I am crushed, and I am so sorry for all of you who were looking forward to this too!

For now I am about to go to sleep and enjoy the fact that no crying baby will wake me. Oh, I will miss that…

Censored To Maintain PG-Rating – Review: Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan

I have a healthy respect for Serge Lutens perfumes. There are many I adore, but there are equally many that have sent me to the sink scrubbing furiously, to get rid of something that did not agree with me.

Usually, light or subtle are not adjectives one would immediately associate with a Lutens creation. And not that Ambre Sultan is either of these traits, but it is way less than what I was expecting in volume.

I thought an amber fragrance from our dear Serge would blast me clean out of my boots, to put it mildly. What I got was a purring kitten, sleeping in my lap, spreading its warmth, not a roaring tiger that is out to have me for dinner.

Ambre Sultan is a gorgeous perfume, an amber to love, an amber to cherish, an amber perfect in its execution, but it does not pack a punch like Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche, Armani Privé Ambre Orient, Parfums d’Empire Ambre Russe or Tom Ford’s Amber Absolute, it is a lot subtler and lower in volume.

I would not make that much of a fuss, were it not a Serge Lutens perfume. You just come to expect certain things and when they are not met, there is a kind of disappointment, that is not necessarily rational or justified. But it is there nonetheless. I let that distract me from appreciating the excellence of this perfume for a while, but thankfully I have come to my senses.

Things would be different had I come from the other side. Never having smelled an amber scent like the ones mentioned above, would probably have resulted in a different view. But volume or lack thereof, is only one side of Ambre Sultan, the other, the gorgeous, the excellent side looks different. So let us talk about the good side of Ambre Sultan now, okay?

Notes include coriander, amber, oregano, bay leaf, myrtle, angelica root, sandalwood, patchouli, benzoin and vanilla. It was created by Christopher Sheldrake in 1993.

Ambre Sultan has a strident medicinal-herbal start – the bay leaf and coriander are clear as day – that I have come to love. It would have sent me running for the hills only a year ago. As soon as the herbal sharpness recedes, a smooth, warm, darkly resinous and complex amber emerges. Deep, interesting, enveloping and sensual. (Okay, it is all out erotic to me, I find it deeply sexy and all those things I am going to refrain from mentioning in a family oriented blog.)

Ambre Sultan is to sensuality what Muscs Kublai Khan is to sexuality.

The essence of an awareness, an all-over sensation of feeling your own borders, your skin as a surface of contact, on fire, an alertness that runs through you from top to toe. All that is happening when I smell Ambre Sultan. Or rather when I imagine it on somebody else.

To elicit that kind of reaction in me beats sheer volume any day.
