Monday Question – What Are Your Top Ten Perfumes Of All Time?

It is time again to make a list!

What are your top ten perfumes without which you wouldn’t want to live?

Which ones are your top priority?

Which ones would you immediately replace if used up?

Which ten perfumes would you take with you if you went on that famed deserted island (full of other Pefumistas willing to swap of course)?

My Answer:

After much waffling, debating and rooting around in my perfume closet, I came up with the following list, in no particular order of importance:

Roja Dove Unspoken

Amouage Beloved

Parfums MDCI Péché Cardinal

Vero Kern Rubj

Chanel 31 Rue Cambon

Frederic Malle Carnal Flower

Mona di Orio Musc

Dior Ambre Nuit

Puredistance I

Cuir de Lancome

I’d be happy with those for quite some time, but there are many I’d sorely miss (my contemporary Guerlains, my Amouages, my Chanels, Feminité du Bois and Ambre Sultan, some Kilians, Juliette Has A Gun Lady Vengeance, SoOud Ouris, a lot of MDCI’s, Mona di Orio’s, Parfumerie Générale’s and… the list could go on and on… so glad you all are on that deserted island too, willing to swap. 😉 )

Can’t wait to read your lists!

    Hi Olfactoria,

    • Olfactoria says:

      Hello Madeleine,
I’m glad you came out of lurk-dom to share your list! 🙂
      It’s a great one!
Since I see Habanita there, did you try the new EdP already? Do you like it?

    • Figuier says:

      Hi Madeleine,

Thanks for delurking – I love your selection of Malles! I own none of them in FB, mainly because of their prohibitive costliness, but they are all *gorgeous*. Still scheming to acquire LPdT and LM 🙂

My list of cant-live-without is short; Guerlain Terracotta, Guerlain Attrape-Coeur, Chanel Cormandel, AG Songes, Chanel Cristalle edt. If funds were no issue I’d add By Kilian Rose Oud and PG Indochine

I think these are the ones I can’t live without, ask me again tomorrow.
    Portia xx

  7. Sandra says:

    Guerlain Gourmand Coquin
    Guerlain Tonka Imperiale
    Vero Kern Rubj
    Amouage Opus VI
    Kilian Amber Oud
    Kilian Liaisons Dangereus
    Kilian Love
    MDCI La Belle Helene
    MDCI Peche Cardinal
    MDCI Rose de Siwa

  8. Alexandra says:

This desert island better be a chilly one, my favourites definitely tend towards winter – In fact I may have to sneak in SL Fleurs d’Oranger just in case we have a hot day…

    Amouage Epic Woman
    SL Chergui
    Neela Vermeire Mohur
    Penhaligons Amaranthine
    PG Cadjmere
    SL Ambre Sultan
Andy Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain
    Ormonde Woman
    Shalimar
    Caron Parfum Sacre

  9. Eva S says:

This one was difficult, but here goes 🙂
    Mitsouko
    Bandit
    Amouage Epic
    Tauer Zeta
    Cuir de Lancome
    Puredistance I
    Guerlain Rose Nacree
    Guerlain Encens Mythique d’Orient
    Guerlain Lys Soleia
    Voyage d’Hermes

  10. tony says:

    Nasomatto black afgano
    PG coze
    Neil morris Fetish
    MFK absolue pour le soir
    Vero profumo Onda edp
    PG aomassai
    Puredistance M
    Amouage interlude for man
    Creed green irish tweed
    tom ford PB tuscan leather

    now this is fun…

  11. annemariec says:

    Hmmm:

    Penhaligon’s Amaranthine
    Rochas Femme
    Ginestet Botrytis
    Chanel No 19
    Diorella
    Goutal’s Heure Exquise
    Lauder’s Private Collection
Miss Dior ORIGINALE (or whatever it is friggin’ well called these days)
    Chanel No 5
    Chanle No 5 Eau Premiere
Vintage Dioressence (oops … is that eleven?)

Daughter nagging for computer so no time to think …

  12. Figuier says:

Hmm, always difficult to make this kind of a list. If I had ten slots, then I’d fill them as per below, but I think only the first 5 really qualify as ‘can’t-live-without’.

    Cristalle edt
    Coromandel
    Songes (either formulation would do)
    Terracotta Voile D’Ete
    Attrape-Coeur
    Sycomore
one of: Jasmine White Moss/Le Parfum de Therese/OJ Tiare
    By Kilian Rose Oud
    Indochine/Bois Blond
    Fracas parfum

I feel bad for leaving out Cuir de Lancome, but haven’t been wearing it much recently. Also, I can see it’s represented on some other lists, so feel it’s getting sufficient attention 😉

  13. Difficult, because I have not been in perfume long enough, but here goes:

    Amouage Memoir
SL Un Bois Vanille (thank you Birgit!)
    PdE Aziyade
    Olympic Orchids Golden Cattleya
    Yosh White Flowers
    1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire
    Rosine Rose Praline
    SL Santal Blanc
    Amouage Ubar
    Amouage Jubilation XXV
    Guerlain Gourmand Coquin

The last 3 aren’t “I’d die without”, and this is all making me realise how little I’ve been exploring recently.

White Flowers I only just finished the sample of, but suspect I would rebuy this over and over.

Memoir I don’t yet own, but this, as well as the first 7 are frags I’d rebuy.

I’m kind of sad that I haven’t got a larger variety (in scent genres), but I have about 40 samples of niche Italian perfumes on their way, so I shall probably be happy again soon 😀

    • Olfactoria says:

That is an awesome list, Melissa!
I hope you have less stress after your move soon, so you can enjoy your new Italian samples.

      • Zubi d'Nova / Melissa de Blok says:

Ah, I expect pure bliss after I’ve moved. There is something very special about Kenya, and I always feel so centred and peaceful there. 🙂

PS I’m craving white florals with a bit of green, and it seems I actually LIKE tuberose… Syrupy white florals will do too – any suggestions? xx

        • Olfactoria says:

          That sounds great!

As for the white florals: I’m mad about Carnal Flower, By Kilian Beyond Love, Estée Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardénia, Montale Intense Tiaré and Nasomatto Nuda.

          • Zubi d'Nova / Melissa de Blok says:

Didn’t love Nuda, enchanted by Narcotic Venus though. I have Carnal Flower sample, do like it but don’t love it. The By Kilian sample pack is on its way to me 😀
I shall look for the other two. Thank you! 🙂

  14. Mille Fleurs says:

    Guerlain Cuir Beluga
    Amouage Jubilation 25
    Amouage Beloved
    Guerlain Rose Nacree
    Guerllain Mythique d’Orient
    Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum
    Lady Primrose Tryst
    Guerlain Oriental Brulant
    Guerlain Vol de Nuit (vintage)
    Byredo La Tulipe

  15. Dominic says:

I need to say first that I haven’t tested many of these niche fragrances that I heard of so many times, but I’m gonna focus on what I know and what’s important for me, the list is very mainstream, but for me these compositions are above and will stay above:
    No 5
    Coco
    Cristalle
    Samsara
    Insolence
    Addict Dior
    Dioressence
    Angel
    L’Eau D’Issey
    Classique JPG

  16. These are the fragrances that I would not want to be without:

    Serge Luten – Chergui
    Hermes – Osmanthe Yunnan
Hilde Soliani – Il Tuo Tulipano
    Hermes – Voyage
    Rochas – Eau de Rochas
    Estee Lauder – Private Collection
Chanel – No 5 Eau Premiere
    Bvlgari – Black
    Fendi – Theorema
    Guerlain – Jicky vintage parfum

  17. Sassa says:

This is where I am today – first, of course, the Chanels
    Chanel:
    No.22
    Bel Respiro
    No 5
    Beige
    Bois des Iles
    No 19 parfum
    Bvlgari
    Black (and maybe Pour Femme)
    Parfumerie Generale:
    Tonkamonde
    L’artisan
    Dzing!
    Dior:
    Dolce Vita

Check back again tomorrow – it’ll be an entirely different list!
Just an FYI – I’ve noticed that despite their huge portfolio, nobody has chosen a Bond 9 fragrance – including me.

  18. hemlocksillage says:

Fun lists, and just choosing 10 makes me feel disloyal to all my other FBs. It’s a sickness 🙂 I tried to pick favorites from different genres:
    Bigarade Concentree
    Rubj
    Homage Attar
    L’Air de rien
    Carnal Flower
    Papyrus de Ciane
    Musc Ravageur
    Kyoto (CdG’s)
    Espirit du Tigre
    Cuir de Lancôme

But on this hypothetical island, all of you are welcome. We’ll have an amazingly fragrant society! Be well.

  19. anatu13 says:

Here is my list–it is very difficult to pare down!
    FM Lys Mediterannee
    OJ Ta’if
    OJ Frangipani
    Vero Profumo Rubj
    Vero Profumo Mito
    SL Fleurs de Citronnier
    SL Fleurs d’Oranger
    Neela Vermiere Bombay Bling
    Tauer Carillon Pour Un Ange
    MdO Vanille

  20. Ellia says:

I also tried to make my choice and I have to say it IS hard, because there are so many of those I like/love/adore/can’t live without 🙂 but… as you mentioned only 10 – here they are:
    Guerlain – Shalimar
    Chanel – Sycomore
    Amouage – Lyric Woman
    Amouage – Memoir Woman
Andy Tauer – L’Air du Desert Marocain
Mona di Orio – Les Nombres d’Or Vanille
Mona di Orio – Les Nombres d’Or Vetyver
    Serge Lutens – Ambre Sultan
    Montale – Red Aoud
    Serge Lutens – Arabie

  21. bloodyfrida says:

    Miller Harris L’Air de Rien
    Creed Fleurs de Bulgarie
    Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau
    L’Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons
    Guerlain Shalimar
    Guerlain Mitsouko
    Guerlain Apres L’Ondee
    Coty L’Aimant
    Coty Chypre
    YSL Opium

  22. Suzy Q says:

    Ambre Sultan–Serge Lutens
    Coromandel–Chanel
    Nuit de Tubereuse–L’Artisan Parfumeur
    Cruel Gardenia–Guerlain
    Infusion d’Iris edp–Prada
    Memoir Woman–Amouage
Seville a l’Aube (yes, it just came out but I’ve already emptied a 10 ml decant)
    Grand Neroli–Atelier Cologne
    No. 5 Eau Premiere–Chanel
    Haight & Ashbury–A Wing and a Prayer

These are the things I wear most often. If I were banished to a deserted island, I’d swap something out for Chanel No. 19. Gotta have something cool and green.

    • Olfactoria says:

      Hmm, I like yours too.
I really fell in love with the unlikeliest (for me) perfumes lately, I really love wearing Cruel Gardenia, despite dismissing it for a long time.

  23. Suzanne says:

    Amouage Opus I
    Amouage Jubilation 25
    Annick Goutal Heure Exquise
    Caron Tabac Blond extrait
    Chanel No. 22
    Frederic Malle Carnal Flower
Frederic Malle Le Parfume de Therese
    Montale Boise Vanille
    Parfums MDCI Chypre Palatin
    Puredistance Antonia

A couple of these I don’t actually own yet in full-bottle, but if I were going to that island today I’d be purchasing them pronto. A week from now, a few might change. So glad that everyone has such great lists so that I can swap some decants very happily on this island of yours, Birgit! 🙂

  24. Oh my, that’s an even harder question than last week! Kept me busy most of the day 😉 First I tried to rationalize this, but then I decided the best way to do this is choose with your heart. So here it is, in no particular order:
    Bois des Iles, Chanel
    Vetiver Dance, Andy Tauer
    Shalimar, Guerlain
    Tubereuse, Mona di Orio
    Amber Oud, Kilian
    Ambre Sultan, Serge Lutens
    Borneo, Serge Lutens
    Tolu, Ormonde Jayne
    Lyric, Amouage
    Hiris, Hermes

  25. Safran says:

My current list of the ten I couldn’t live with, are

    Carnal Flower – Frederic Malle
    Bigarade Concentree – Frederic Malle
    Orange Sanguine – Atelier Cologne
    Iris Ganache – Guerlain
    Io – Hilde Soliani
Rivage des Syrtes – Parfums MDCI
    Oeillet – Scent Systems
    Traversee du Bosphore – L’Artisan
    Tubereuse – Mona di Orio
    Cafe Noir – DSH

Looks like, a few amber scents are missing here, but that would be the list from an end of summer point of view.

    Cheers
    Safran

  26. CM says:

My Top 10 (no particular order)
    Chanel #19
    Amouage Dia
    FM L’Eau d’Hiver
    FM Pink Poudre
    Chanel Beige
    Cuir de Lancome
    L’Artisan L’Ete en Douce
Mimosa Pour Moi over Dzing (I always wear this combo, so it counts as one)
    JHaG Citizen Queen
    Amber Prexieux

  27. smokeytoes says:

    Hi there
    my top ten would be:
    1) Original Fendi always has been my first love (I have 7 backup bottles plus one extrait)
    2) Sikkim By Lancome (beautiful leather)
    3) Magie Noire by Lancome (I have 3 vintage backup bottles)
    4) Bandit by Piguet
    5) Vintage Shiseido Feminite du Bois (I have an extrait backup)
    6) Vintage Shiseido Murasaki (ethereal iris over an incense/leather base)
    7) Niki de st Phalle
    8) Chanel No 5 (sentimental value as it was my first gift from a boy)
    9) Chanel No 19 (the juice MUST be vintage or forget it)
    10) Hermes Amazone (again, the juice must be vintage or forget it) my alternate would be Hermes Eau des Merveilles in edt or extrait formulation.

  28. Oh man, coming up with 10 is tough!

    Hmmm . . .

    Bulgari Black
    Chanel Coromandel
    SL Chergui
    L’Artisan Parfumeur Safran Troublant
FM Une Fleur de Cassie, Carnal Flower, and Musc Ravageur
Mona di Orio Oud (got my sweaty paws on that mini!!! and there is a travel set just out that I can afford!)
Parfums Del Rae Bois de Paradis
    Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine

The list is a little random ;-), like all lists are. But that’s what makes lists fun! Thanks for such a great Monday question!

  29. jamesdennard says:

My list- not necessarily in any order:

    Guerlain Vetiver (vintage)
    Dior Eau Sauvage
By Kilian- A Taste Of Heaven
    Guerlain Habit Rouge
    Bvlgari Black
    Chanel Pour Monsieur
    Prada Amber pour homme
    Editions de Parfums- Vetiver Extraordinaire
    Shulton Old Spice
    Rive Gauche pour homme

A few observations: with an eleventh pick I probably would include Tabac Original, or maybe Alt Innsbruck. Also, even though I love vetiver-based fragrances, I tried not to put two of them in there. But I couldn’t keep either of them off the list.

  30. nina says:

Oh, so many, so little time to wear each!! And please, original formulations!!!

    Guerlain Jicky
    Guerlain Mitsouko
    Guerlain L’Heure Blu
    Lancome Magie Noir
    Balmain Vent Vert
    Balmain Ivoire
    Fendi
    Faberge Princess Grace of Monaco
Hermes Dans Un Jardin de Nil
    Hermes Eau De Merveilles
    Jil Sander 3

Oops that’s 11 but I could go on and on and on! Fun question to answer while watching tennis!!
I dream of fragrances, I mean I can smell them in my sleep!!

    Ciao bella!

    • Olfactoria says:

How lovely, I bet you have sweet dreams! 😉

Impressive list, nina. And I agree, most of these really are ruined in the current formula.

      • nina says:

Years ago, while visiting London, I picked up my first bottle of Egoisite at Harrod’s. I didn’t care if it was a man’s fragrance, I adored it! Another wonderful trip included Nice and I was in heaven touring perfume museums and Molinard. Habinita was my pick then, I wonder if it’s changed now? And, oh, the scent of lavender in the air. What an experience!!

  31. Tara says:

Ha! The mother of all Monday Questions! I love it.

I love your list too B, so wide-ranging. You’ve thought it through so that you’ve got all bases covered for every whim on that desert island.

I’m glad it’s been a long day and my brain is frazzled so I’m not able to agonise too much over my rash choices 🙂

    Vol de Nuit
    Diorella
    Shalimar
    Portrait of a Lady
    Bois des Iles
    Cuir de Russie
    Cuir de Lancome
    Osmanthus Yunnan
    Equistrius
    Bois d’Argent

Oh the pain – no Fleur d’Oranger, no Kyoto or 31RC – but great fun and so many great lists to read here.

    • Olfactoria says:

Haha, thanks, it is the mother of all MQ’s I guess. 😀
Your list is wonderful, as expected, but it is a pain to leave those three behind, I’ll let you take 13. 😉

  32. Jesus says:

MMM I don’t know, my wardrobe is quite contemporary… let’s see… in no particular order:

    Carnal Flower
    Black Aoud
    Tubereuse Criminelle
    Blue Amber
    Tobacco Vanilla
    Tom of Finland
    Nº 19 EDP
    Absolue pour Le Soir
    L’Ombre dans L’Eau
    Coromandel

Honorable mentions to: sweet oriental dream, arabie, patchouli noir (il profumo), Lonestar Memories, Fleur de Male, Le 3º Homme…

  33. Anita T. Monroe says:

I have learned so much from reading this blog and the comments. Most of my choices are classic ones, but I am starting to slowly acquire some of the scents that are new to me. Here is my list:

    Jicky
    Vol de Nuit
    Shalimar
    Caleche
    1000 by Patou
    Fracas
    L’Interdit
    Dune
    Sensuous
    Chanel #5

  34. Kimberly says:

Wow! You’re so sweet today! Last time you had us narrow it down to just one;). (I mean, you tried, we’re kind of hard to reel in:).

    1) Attrape Couer (of course)
    2) La Belle Helene
    3) Peche Cardinal
    4) J’adore L’eau Cologne Florale (OMG! I just went to check how to spell the name properly, and I think it may be discontinued. There is a l’eau, but not Cologne Florale. This stuff is like aromatherapy to me. My head and neck just started hurting.
Deep breath and perspective, life goes on:
    5) Chamade EDP
    6) J’adore L’or (this pains me, as I don’t really feel like speaking to Dior right now)
    7) Lyric for women
    8) Cardinal Flower
    9) MDO Tubereause
    10) Zeta

Crisis aside, I am so lucky to have so many beautiful scents in my life, and so many truly beautiful people who appreciate the same things I do!:)

    • Olfactoria says:

Oh that is an amazing list, I’ll take most of those too please. 😉
Dior is really the worst house when it comes to upkeeping their legacy, I like the Collection Privée, but what they are doing to their classics is a real shame.

  35. Nancysg says:

A short list. Some are old favorites and some are new, but all ones I love.
Calyx by Prescriptives – perfect summer feel
Sung (but is must be vintage). What one of daughters thinks Mom smells like.
    Copper Skies by Kerosene
    Opus VI by Amouge

    • Kimberly says:

I haven’t tried any of these, they must be amazing if you can list them off so confidently. And, I can’t help but notice that you have six open slots left that you’re not using…. Would you mind if I took two, since they are just sitting there, not doing anything? Just for A Taste of Heaven and Sweet Redemption? Would you like anything in return? Of course, if you were saving them for further reflection, or planning to give them to other people, I totally understand, and thank you for just considering it.:)

    • Olfactoria says:

Nancy, you are the first who is able to narrow it down to four, I admire you!

      • NSGrot says:

I have been a one bottle at a time person for so long, that to even have multiple bottles to pack into the desert island suitcase is impressive for me. There are just some scents that are integral to my perfume history. I am working on finding six more absolute favorites.

  36. Pahge says:
