My Very Own Kelly – Finding Hidden Beauty Part IV

When I think about beauty, some things instantly come to mind that stand for this elusive concept.

Like this woman for example:

grace 1

Grace Kelly has a perfect first name: she is grace personified and grace is a big part of beauty. Grace was famous for carrying a particular Hermès bag, which was eventually re-named the Kelly in her honor.

A real Kelly bag by Hermès is very, very expensive and probably not suited to my lifestyle anyway, I probably would be afraid to even carry such a luxurious item.

But look what my dear husband has been doing on the sly for a while…

He didn’t finish it in time for Christmas, but allowed me to make photos of the nearly finished bag.

Kelly Michi 2

He made it out of Hermès carrier bags. 🙂

Now if that is not a beautiful thing, I don’t know what is…

Awww, so sweet. I have only recently discovered your blog (through reading APJ blog) and I’m really enjoying it! Thank you! I especially liked reading some past entries on Vol de Nuit vintage parfum and Interlude Man, which I have also only just discovered and love!

  2. Melis says:

Oh my goodness, B! That brought tears to my eyes. What a great man you have.

  3. Sandra says:

That is the sweetest idea that I have heard in a while! What a talented and thoughtful husband you have.

  4. Jordan River says:

Very thoughtful. Clearly a 21 Century Man. How many 100ml flacons will that hold per shopping trip? However, just like perfume, one is never enough. I think you will need one for each arm.

    • Olfactoria says:

I think it’ll hold quite a few bottles. And in some cases – like handbags and husbands – one is enough (at least one at a time, and that is referring to handbags only of course. 😉 )

  5. RuthF says:

Omg! There’s one of those bags on EBay for over $70,000US finishing in 20 minutes, hurry up ladies!

  6. Tell the husband we are extremely impressed.
    Portia xx

  7. Kafkaesque says:

Your husband sounds marvelous. Not only a fabulous sense of humour, according to Portia’s accounts, but also incredibly thoughtful *and* creative!

OT: you very much evoke Grace Kelly in my mind. It’s the sylph-like beauty and grace.

  8. Ines says:

What a lovely, thoughtful husband you have! 🙂
    Ingenious too.

  9. poodle says:

He is a keeper! That might be one of the sweetest things I’ve ever heard of a man doing.

  10. Tara says:

That is such a beautiful thing to do and must earn him at least one thousand husband points 🙂

  11. brie says:

Agree with Kafka…you have a similar look to Grace Kelly 🙂 !!
And your husband is definitely a “keeper”!

  12. shellyw says:

What a lovely man. Congratulations on a rare find (the man) the bags can be bought but not thoughtfulness like that.

  13. laniersmith says:

Of all the people I know in person and on the internet you, Birgit come closest to the beautiy and grace of Grace Kelly. And that BAG!! It is magnificent. Now that is a labor of love.
My best to you and your lovely husband.

  14. fleurdelys says:

Wow! Your husband is a very creative and clever guy (not to mention thoughtful).

I did see a chainsaw made out of Chanel carrier bags at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. However, that would be for a different taste.

  15. Tomate Farcie says:

AND you’re a lot happier than Grace Kelly ever was!

  16. Suzanne says:

Your sweet husband is the coolest guy. I still remember his wonderful guest post about the dining spots that the two of you hit in NYC — and especially his thumbs-up account of the Kramer tour and lunch at the Soup Nazi place.

And now this Hermes bag? Amazing. Very well done, Mr. OT!! 🙂

    • Olfactoria says:

The Kramer tour earned him a lot of points with you apparently. 🙂
He cannot deal with praise and acts grumpy when confronted with all those lovely comments. 😉

  17. I frankly think that your husband’s gift is 100% more beautiful than any Kelly bag. Amazing craftmanship!

  18. Undina says:

Birgit, your husband is definitely The husband! 🙂 It’s a very sweet thing to do. I’d take that type of a bag over any bag in the world.
You are a very special woman: you’ve chosen a very special man and still inspire him to do such wonderful things.

  19. Alexandra says:

Thoughtful, personal AND Hermes – what a wonderfully happy combination, I agree with everyone else, he is definitely a keeper! x

  20. happyface313 says:

Oh, what a lovely, lovely husband! Mine made me one too, many years ago. It even lights up when opening and has a built in mirror. But it’s so heavy that I can’t take it anywhere. But I displayed it so that I can see it every day 🙂 – We should really cherish there guys! 🙂 Have a lovely evening! 🙂

  21. Kimberly says:

Wow, that’s love! Congratulations on having a skilled husband who is so inspired by you, and congratulations to your husband as well. (I always think it’s important for a man to have a muse:)). I just saw that Undina wrote the same thing, but I was thinking it already, promise!

  22. Wow, that is the sweetest gift ever! You are one lucky woman Birgit!

  23. Vanessa says:

You just know that a man who can fashion such a beautiful bag will be able to perform transformative wizardry in and around the jawline.

  24. Das says:

Oh. My. God. Wow. I know hubbies like to let things go to their heads, but THIS…this is amazing!!! So sweet and thoughtful! This tops the hi-tech gadgets some people get as gifts..ahem. 😉 Seriously, what a lovely gesture of love.
