The Crankiness Report – Something Bothers Me

Sometimes there are days, when you only wonder what else can go wrong…

I have had a string of just such days recently and some thing in particular affects my perfume life, so I am going to shortly address it here.

Read on at your own peril…

The Austrian Post office was never a place of pure comfort. Dealing with unmotivated and massively uninformed clerks was routine. Having to inquire over lost things was routine and dealing with a nearly analphabetic mail man (imagine!!!) was also an infuriating routine. But now I have had it!

I regularly send packages, giveaway winner’s samples, perfumed packages to fellow bloggers and friends, I go to the post office at least once a week and it was never a cheap venture. But now the prices were jacked up in an obcene way. It costs me 25€ to send a small package of two or three sample vials! That is no longer an option I am afraid.

When I went to the post office today to send off the five giveaway packages and two more for friends, I was presented with the “economy” option of 120€ (six weeks on the road though!) and the “regular” option for 155€. Are they completely crazy???

There is no way that this can be true?! Obviously they have no desire to transport mail any longer, because no normal person would consider paying such outrageous prices. The explanation was that they had to comply to international standards, a blatant lie, if I ever heard one. I know what it costs to ship small parcels from other countries, since I get those regularly and I, for one, am able to read.

I am currently investigating alternative options, but there are not many. Austria is no third world country for God’s sake! I probably shouldn’t vent here, but since this affects the way I can interact with all of you, it makes me furious. I love being a part of a caring community, I love sending out perfumes I love for others to experience, I love to hold a draw now and again. But I can’t and won’t pay through my nose for the privilege.

The five winners of this weeks giveaway, please be patient for a few days, while I try to find the most economic option to send out your parcels. They will be sent as fast as possible!

Think how much perfume one can get for 155€ (not to speak of more essential things)! I just can’t afford or justify that amount of money for shipping.

Sorry for repeating myself and for the emotional outbreak, but I know that you are the ones who understand me best, since you are sending out loving, fragant missives into the world as well…

Oh no! I’m sorry! And I thought Canada was bad about shipping fragrances! How frustrating!

  2. ki. says:

That is ridiculous! One of the things I love most about perfumes is sharing them with others and high shipping rates makes that impossible :/ I hope you find a solution!

    • Olfactoria says:

The spectre of not being able to ship samples anymore, makes me feel very isolated. The world seems so small when online, but that kind of postal stupidity a big step backwards. 😦

  3. dremybluz says:

I am sorry to hear about the outrageous Austrian Mail charges. Instead of sending your samples, would it be more economical to buy samples of the perfumes (you want to send) on line and pay whatever shipping charges the stores charge. Instead of having them mailed to you have the stores mail them to your winners or friends.

  4. Lavanya says:

oh- that really sucks! and doesn’t make any sense at all..Hope you can find figure out a cheaper alternative. I have read on other blogs about your generosity and I can imagine how this must be upsetting..*hugs*

  5. anotherperfumeblog says:

That is ridiculous! I also hope that you are able to find another alternative.

  6. Tara says:

B, you are not being cranky at all, those prices are daylight robbery! I know you had to re-package a parcel to me once because of the cost but I had no idea it had got this bad. It’s nothing like as expensive to post from the UK, I really don’t know how they can justify it and what they hope to achieve by this, apart from losing customers You are so generous B and as ki said, sharing perfume is a big part of the fun, but I for one don’t want you to pay those extortionate fees out of principle, aside from the cost. Sorry to hear you’ve had trying times recenlty, hope things get better x

    • Olfactoria says:

Tara, this makes me so sad. I don’t want to be excluded from the mutual sharing in our lovely community by idiotic new regulations. What can you do, sigh…

  7. Suzanne says:

That’s highway robbery!!! I don’t blame you for being outraged.

Birgit, please hold onto the sample I won in your drawing. In my case, I have been on the receiving end of your (and a number of other perfume bloggers’) generosity lately, and I have plenty of perfume samples to keep me occupied.

Good heavens, though, I hope that the Austrian postal service gets the message. I can’t imagine they’ll be doing much business in the future at those prices.

    • Olfactoria says:

Suz, no, I want to send that package, it may be my last…
I have no illusions that they get the message, they do not seem to be interested in serving customers, hell knows how those brains work…

  8. jedennard says:

You can always vent here, dear Birgit. You are among friends and that’s part of what we are here for.

That is very unfortunate. I love to use regular mail to send letters and packages, but post offices here are also suffering from inefficiency and high prices. Just this weekend a friend of mine was telling me that she had sent her wedding invitations out two weeks ago and hardly anyone, myself included has received theirs yet. Sending a big hug and hopes that you find a better option out there somewhere.

  9. JoanElaine says:

B, I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. I thought the postal rates here in Canada were high – this is just rediculous!

I’m sure there is a way around this. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help here from Canada.

I hope you feel better soon.

  10. Asali says:

I feel for you. Danish shipping (and I fear all of Scandinavia) has had postal prices like that for ages. It’s terrible! With those prices, hopefully we’ll see some competition soon:-)

    • Olfactoria says:

I am hoping for some different mail service provider to swoop in, the time would be more than right.
I’m sorry that the situation in Denmark is equally bad, Asali!

  11. Those prices are absolutely insane!!! Boo to the postal service!!!

  12. Vanessa says:

I stopped buying postcards in Switzerland a while ago (1 euro 25c each compared with about 35p), never mind the extortionate cost of sending them, but had not yet caught up with the out and out robdoggery of the Austrian postal service. I am in Austria next week – so far no further east than Linz, but a few more things have yet to fall into place. If I made it to Vienna I could act as sample mule and mail any packages for you from the UK on my return! There would be a delay of a week, but it is something to consider if I do manage to get up to your area?

    • Olfactoria says:

You are a star, Vanessa! I’ll try to find a shipping oütion in the meantime, but if you know until Friday or so whether you will be in Vienna, it would be a lovely (and way cheaper) solution.
And aside from all that postal grief, it would be so lovely to meet you in person! 🙂

  13. masha7 says:

How about a trip to Germany, for tourism and Deutsche Post?? I sent many samples via the DP and it cost the regular amount, just a euro or so for each little packet. I also regularly sent miniature paintings all over the world as an artist exchange, and it was very reasonable. Unless, of course, these new prices are part of a new EU policy??? GACK!

  14. Undina says:

That sounds outrageous! It doesn’t make any sense for you to spend that amount of money on shipping samples. Please do not feel obligated to send my sample: I’d rather spend money buying it myself here and boycott your postal services.

    • Olfactoria says:

It is outrageous, I feel my blood pressure rising again, just thinking about it.
I want to keep my promises though, Undina, and while his is probably the last sample round I can send out, send it I will!

  15. Sandra says:

Yes, the Austrian postage stinks. We have been complaining for years that most international packages never arrived at their destination and we had to pay for certified mail. Then this year the prices were hiked up and I cringe every time I need to send something overseas whether it be documents or presents. Christmas this year is definitely going to be amazon! I too have had it! Now i only deal with the post for business purposes.

  16. Ines says:

I’m appalled! I pay those amounts in kunas and only when sending rather large packages (1E = 7,30kunas).
That is such a ridiculous amount of money that I keep thinking they are mistaking the numbers and adding a zero at the end.
I’m very sorry to hear that. At least we can still send packages to you. 🙂

    • Olfactoria says:

Yes, I thought so as well at first, since they hae a hard time reading, maybe Maths isn’t their strongest suit either? But sadly it is true… That last sentence is so typically Ines. Let me hug you! xoxo 🙂

  17. Miguel says:

Ahhh, the wonders of the privatization of a natural monopoly! Services have gotten worse and prices risen sky high. I too have had unbelievable experiences with mailmen who can’t speak basic German let alone read it.
But, I read the stock of Austrian Post has risen an average of 15% annually the last few years, and they pay out nice dividends — so it looks like a few are really enjoying these changes. The people, though, not so much…
I refuse to use Austrian Post unless it’s a very unavoidable vital matter. There should be a referendum for its forcible re-nationalization.

    • Olfactoria says:

Thank you for sharing your equally horrible experiences with the Post, Miguel. Your information makes me angry all over again, at least the stockholders are happy! 😦

  18. deeHowe says:

WOW! How did I miss this? That is just insanity, there is no reason for prices like that! I’ll send you a nice package from Texas to make you feel better 😉

  19. Natalia says:

Ouch! How terrible! I, too, want to send you a package now since I love reading your blog. I’m serious, if you dont mind, please share your postal address, i list my email under my name 🙂 I sure hope you’re not the only one pissed and that AP will have to get back to their senses somehow.
