Monday Question – What Perfume Describes You Best?

Is there a perfume that is very much “you”?

A perfume that makes you feel complete?

A perfume that is like you are or hope to be?

Which perfume out there fits your personality best?

And if you didn’t find it yet, how should your perfume be?

My Answer:

My perfume, the one that describes me best is a perfume that is contradictory, no linear scent would be appropriate for me, it is melancholic, has that peculiar quality of happy-sadness. And it is heavy on the base notes, lasts long and sings with a deep voice, no chirpy tones. It is soft and smooth mostly, but a jagged edge here and there makes it interesting. It is dark, but has a golden light seeping in. It is sensual and prim, it is warm and cool, familiar and aloof.

My perfume is Frapin 1697. My perfume is Guerlain l’Heure Bleue. My perfume is Penhaligon’s Amaranthine. My perfume is Xerjoff Oesel. My perfume has to have more than one personality. 🙂

  1. Sandra says:

Hi O., I have an inside and outside perfume personality. If I’m in the comfort of my home, I would say my perfume is Brulure de Rose by Parfumerie Generale. At work, when I need to be clearheaded and analytical, I feel very: Sel de Vetiver by Different Company or Gris Clair by Serge Lutens. And my overall personality perfume is Knowing by Estee Lauder because it was the first perfume I absolutely fell in love with a long long time ago at Schiphol Airport and because it was also my grandmother’s favourite.

    • Olfactoria says:

      Hello Sandra,
      thank you for commenting!
Beautiful choices, I love Brulure de Rose very much as well. I can see how your office choices help you project professionalism and calm.
And Knowing probably holds many good memories for you.

  2. Ines says:

I was wondering if there was a way to cheat on this question because one perfume can’t possibly encompass all of me.
But if I had to go with a grouping, I’d be an oriental. 🙂
My perfume is Shalimar. And Caravelle Epicee by Frapin. And Chanel 19. 🙂

  3. lady jane grey says:

Hah, if I only knew… I think I haven’t find the one parfum yet describing me entirely. I rather separate your questions :
    1. A perfume that makes you feel complete? That would be Dzonghka, or Gris Clair

    2. A perfume that is like you … hope to be? I so much would like to be like Bel Respiro… (wise, clear, extremely well done… 😉 )

  4. Alexandra says:

L’Ombre Dans L’Eau, L’Heure Bleue, Tabac Blond are the perfumes that currently depict my personality, or the way I think my personality is. No white flowers/citrus, dense, full bodied. This is how I think my personality smells like 🙂

  5. Tara says:

From what I know of you B, I don’t think one perfume could sum you up either! As for me, I would love to be Shalimar, who let’s her presence be known and isn’t afraid to let her hair down and act come-hither. However I am actually Bois des Iles, a lot more shy but hopefully with hidden depths 🙂

  6. jedennard says:

Right now I would say my choice would be Rive Gauche pour homme- a fragrance with the ability to dress up or down depending on what the situation calls for, but remains just as comfortable in either environment. I could say this about a few other fragrances I own, but today RGPH is my answer.

  7. Sandra says:

Such a tough question. I do not have a single scent as I did many years ago. My first love was Diva, which started it all. To name a few of my current favorite perfumes which bring me joy and comfort – Memoir, Frapin 1697, Rose Oud and Incense Oud by Kilian, Ananda, Ta’if and La Belle Helene. I wish I could narrow it down to just one… sadly I cannot.

    • Olfactoria says:

I only recently got to try La Belle Helen, it is truly lovely. Your choices are all perfumes I like as well, we seem to gave very similar tastes. 🙂

  8. Caro says:

The perfumes that feel most “me” are definitely warm, some of them ambery, some powdery.
Almost all of them have rose notes, but they are not that smooth. They have something disturbing.
Poussiere de Rose smells as if it had been made for me,I find it easy to wear and comforting. So is Myrrhe Ardente.
Lyric is the beauty I’d like to be, I wear it when I want to feel at my most beautiful. Ta’if is for when I want to feel beautiful yet cheerful.
(Vintage) L’Heure Bleue is for days when I want to wallow in melancholy.

  9. Suzanne says:

Chanel No. 22 is the perfume that I think of as being the most “me,” only because it represents the idealized version of who I’d like to be (and I spend a lot of time thinking about the ideal version of…well, just about everything, even if it is quite unobtainable). 🙂 I love the joyous, light-filled white florals; the crisp aldehydes that lend it polish and formality; and the unexpected marriage of all of this to incense. It’s one of those rare perfumes that somehow manages to be both joyous and serious (contemplative). Everytime I wear it I feel elevated in every regard.

    • Olfactoria says:

No22 is marvellous! I distinctly remember my surprise when I first wore it. I knew nothing about it and when the incense came forward I laughed out loud in delight! I prefer it to No5. That you see No22 as your perfume fits wonderfully with the image I have of you in my mind: Elegant, intelligent, joyful and deep.

  10. deeHowe says:

There are moments when I wish that there was just one perfume that could sum up my whole collection (Dior Mitzah, maybe, lol!), but I think that the perfumes that describe me best at this moment in my life are…

    1. Memoir Woman. Anyone tired of hearing me bleat about this one yet? Memoir is my ideal self, how I hope to be remembered.

    2. Le Labo Poivre 23. Has there ever been a more perfect setting for labdanum? With the added incense, sandalwood, and vanilla, this fragrance is closest to my fantasy bespoke scent.

    3. Amouage Opus IV. Because the most beautiful things are also a little quirky, I feel like this fragrance best describes my actual personality: almost abrasively strange at first, but if you give it some time, it’s unusual beauty will comfort you, and keep your attention 😉

How’s that? A fragrance for each side of the woman: Maid, Mother, Crone! Not sure which is which, though 🙂

    • Olfactoria says:

Such a beautiful answer, thank you, Dee! If I had been asked to name the three perfumes I associate with you, my answer would have been the same. 🙂

Maybe we should experiment a little: if we poured 1ml of all the contents of our perfume cabinets into a bottle, how close would the resulting mixture be to Mitzah? 😉

  11. I could have mentioned a couple fragrances, but the one that instantly came to mind is Ormonde Jayne Woman, so I’d better stick with that. It’s got a unique combination of strangeness and comfort, of sharp and smooth, it’s everything I could ever hope for, and everything I am inside.

I will tell you that I would miss L’Heure Bleue terribly, it comes in as a close second. Like you say, that’s just one facet of me. Wistful. 🙂 Aftelier Tango makes me forget my age, I feel younger and forget my problems. Now THAT is a powerful perfume!

    • Olfactoria says:

You have such powerful choices, Carrie. And they are the ones I expected you to give… Tango, OJ Woman and L’Heure Bleue – a beautiful person indeed.

  12. Liam says:

It’s safe to say, mine is Breath of God by Gorilla Perfume. I just find it to be the most incredible stuff. It suits me perfectly, all it’s angles, all it’s notes, everything, just smells so perfect. I’m not trying to say I’m “incredible” or “perfect” either mind you 😉 but something about it smells, a little mysterious and truly different – I always *feel* myself when wearing it. Maybe that’s what it is, when a fragrance makes you feel like you’re at your best.

  13. Marla says:

Isn’t L’Heure Bleue The One?? I get more compliments when I wear it (vintage) than anything else in my perfume wardrobe. Sadly, it’s a little overwhelming in a tropical heat wave…. And I’m looking forward to seeing the HP movie this weekend, but you know, I heard they destroyed the part with Snape and Lily, and turned it into “Snape had a secret crush on the most popular girl” instead of the complex relationship in the book. If this is true, I’m going to storm around the theater!! That was my favorite part of the book, I even cried…. Apparently the writers thought the relationship as written in the book was “boring”. ACK!!

    • Olfactoria says:

Too bad that you can’t wear L’Heure Bleue in the heat of your new home.

I hate when movies change vital aspects of a book, I understand that it has to be shorted and adapted in many ways, but changing storylines is grating for me. I hope I can see the new movie this coming weekend too. 🙂

    • Ines says:

Marla, that’s not how I came to understand that part of the movie but then again I drew heavily from my knowledge of the book and I always wonder how can people who haven’t read the book follow the story and understand it completely.
I wonder if I would have seen it in another light if it weren’t for the book. Then again, the ending itself lends more credence to the way I saw that part of the movie than what you heard so I hope you’ll be satisfied. I know I was. 🙂

  14. JoanElaine says:

Always love your Monday Questions! I read your post this morning, and knew I would need time to come up with answers!

The description of your perfume sounds like the formula for a supremely gorgeous fragrance. May I have a sample? 😉

A perfume that makes me feel complete: Youth Dew – vintage, of course. It’s warm, plush and fits me like a glove!

Which perfume out there fits my personality best: I think a good candidate would be Serge Lutens’ Fille en Aiguilles. To me it’s a “serious” scent, moody and a little odd. Some days, it smells like a cup of coffee on Christmas morning, other times like a dense forest of pine and oak.

  15. I cannot say which fragrance describes me best, I guess others would have to answer this question for me. I can tell you which fragrance makes me feel like going home every time I wear it and it is Sarrasins. If you ask which fragrance I would like to be like, that’s a different story and I would have to say Montale Black Aoud. In your face, leaves a long lasting impression and smells like a rose.

  16. I was reading your description of a perfect fragrance and Lalique Le Parfum came to mind, I don’t know why…
Have you tried it? What do you think of it?

  17. Undina says:

When I read this question yesterday I tried to come up with an answer and I couldn’t. There are at least several perfumes that I like very much (love?) but I’m not sure I can tell that any one of them is “me”. Perfumes – no matter how much I enjoy them – do not define or complete me. They are not a part of me, they are my possessions.
Today I thought about it again and suddenly a name came to mind – Ubar. I will not try to analyze it, I’ll take what I’ve got: Ubar is my final answer.
