Monday Question – What Are Your Top Three Favorite Perfumes?

Yes, it is one of those awful questions again!

YOU MUST CHOOSE!

What are the three perfumes you would not want to be without?

Use any scenario that puts on adequate pressure (house of fire, stranded on an island, at gunpoint…) and tell me: What are your top three?

Why those three?

*malicious grin*

My Answers:

I always pose such hard questions, only to be stumped myself when I have to answer them too…

Okay, no way around it, I have to step up to my own challenge after all:

1. Prada Infusion d’Iris – because it is so versatile and I was never bored or bothered by it (yet).

2. Guerlain Shalimar Ode a la Vanille – because it covers the warm cashmere shawl/elegant evening/comfort scent categories all in one bottle.

3.Guerlain Sous le Vent – because it is the most “me” scent I can think of.

I am not happy with my choices, but I can’t see a way to change them either, I have no happy scent (Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine), no Puredistance (uneconomical choice, small bottle, horrible loss!), no Chanel (how can one exist without a little Chanel, I ask you?), no Incense (who will calm me, if not Andy Tauer?), no single Malle (how is that even conceivable?)  and no gourmand for those sweet moments (Iris Ganache).

But those are the rules. I can’t wait to hear about your agonizing choices. (Yes, I am in a bit of a sado-masochistic phase.)

  1. JoanElaine says:

Ooh, what a cruel question! I better choose quick before I start to think about it.
My choices are Coco de Chanel, Estee Lauder Knowing and Diptyque L’Eau de L’Eau.

    Wait…can I choose again? 😉

  2. deeHowe says:

I love these masochistic quizes! And, since I finally have a somewhat decent internet connection, I had better answer quick, before it’s lost:
    1. Shalimar extrait: one of my first perfumes after becoming a… collector, Shalimar always makes me feel beautiful, no matter what the occasion.
    2. Safran Troublant: easy, comfortable, never regretted.
    3. Memoir Woman: because it’s the most “me” scent I’ve found to date, and I don’t ever want to be without it!

  3. 1. Ormonde Jayne Woman- it is my favorite scent right now and I find myself reaching for it so often these days. It’s complex and challenging, yet has a soothing undercurrent.

    2. Le Labo Oud 27- My love for this one is long-standing and undying. The combination of these particular notes is ultra-satisfying for me to wear. It has sharp edges, like me.

    3. Aftelier Tango- the equivalent of a good cup of tea. It’s grounding, and it’s a useful sort of scent that lifts my mood.

  4. Gisela says:

Oh, this is hard! But if I absolutely had to choose, I would grab my three Vero Kern extraits:
Onda – covers my back when I need it.
Kiki – the most yummy lavender I know.
Rubj – blooms stunningly in warm weather.
And all three never fail to amaze me with their development and high quality, and because Vero Kern is such a nice person!

    • Olfactoria says:

Ah, you remind me that these have been on my to try list for too long. For now I can only attest to the niceness of Vero Kern, I really need to smell her perfumes, it is high time!

  5. lady jane grey says:

    At the moment (I emphasise that!) : Dzing! (L’Art.P.), Ta’if (Ormond J.), C. de Vetiver Sacre (L’Art.P.) – I’m a L’Artisan girl…
But it could change very quickly : I’m flying to LDN today, with some spare time for shopping…

    • Olfactoria says:

Lol, it is always just picture of the moment with us perfume addicts. I understand you completely, I was fretting for days over my choices. 🙂
Have fun in London (especially in the spare time!) 😉

  6. Tara says:

OK now you’ve put Ode a la Vanille in your Top 3 I am really stressing out because I never tried it and now it’s probably all gone! Before I read them, I guessed yours would be Puredistance 1, Iris Silver Mist and Sous le Vent, so only got one out of three.

Working out my 3 favourites began to melt my brain so I thought of which perfumes I’d choose if I could only have 3 for the rest my life. Hope that’s not cheating 🙂 So –

    1. Bois des Illes – it is my “me” scent.
    2. Diorella – it is so uplifting and complex, I adore it.
    3. Sarrasins – as I’d need a leahter and this one makes me swoon the most.

Argh! It’s never been so hard to press “Post Comment”!

    • Olfactoria says:

Your choices are great, Tara! But I know about the hardship of pressing post, you have no idea how often I have edited my answer prior to publishing this post, but it is never right! I forgot Iris Silver Mist, for God’s sake! Puredistance I got left behing because I was thinking practically and it is my special occasion scent not one for every day.
I need to revisit Bois des Iles, between you and Dee, this perfume gets mentioned at least once a day! 😉

  7. Ines says:

Before I read through other replies, here is what I came up with with hours of consideration (well, 2 only). 🙂
    1. Vintage Vent Vert
    2. Original Feminite du Bois or Shalimar extrait de parfum (as Fem is no longer available as original) – ok, so I cheated here a bit
    3. and of course, Lyric by Amouage. 🙂

    • Olfactoria says:

To be strict, these are four choices, but you are excused (this one time!) 😉
Interesting and beautiful choices, Ines! Must dig out my Vent Vert agin one of these days, it has been too long already.

    • I recently had the opportunity to try vintage Vent Vert, and I love it, it is so beautiful. It feels very foreign to me, but it’s one of those scents I *wish* I could say is totally “me”.

  8. Alice C says:

Well, these choices you foist upon us….
    1. Roma–my every day scent for 20 years, it must be with me… 🙂
    2. Meteorites – to bring back wonderful childhood memories…
    3. Ambre Sultan- love it!

    • Olfactoria says:

Thanks for being brave and taking the challenge, Alice! 🙂
Is that Roma by Laura Biagotti? I wore it when I was in high school, I had almost forgotten it, thank you for reminding me. 🙂

    • Ambre Sultan was the perfume that brought me back to amber. I used to love amber in general and wore it all the time, then one day I just became burnt out on it and swore it off for a couple of years. Ambre Sultan has a certain something about it that made me so wistful, and I realized I just need to be more selective with amber. Problem solved!

  9. bloody frida says:

    Diptyque’s L’Ombre dans L’Eau
    Miller Harris L’Air de Rien
    Profumum Ninfea

but just for today! Tomorrow my choices may be different! 😉

  10. Cymbaline says:

I read (and love) your blog, but haven’t commented before. I couldn’t resist joining in on this question and really enjoyed reading everyone’s responses!

L’Heure Bleue-a perfume I love so much that I actually wore only it for 2 years
Kiki extrait- I agree with Gisela “the most yummy lavender I know”
L’Air du Desert Marocain – heartily recommended for sweet dreams!

    • Olfactoria says:

Hi Cymbaline, I am glad to hear from you! 🙂
Ah, L’Heure Bleue, it is really a wonderful perfume, I am all for Tauer and another mention of Vero Kern, really time for me to try them! Great Choices!

  11. Denise says:

Lyric, OJ Woman, Cuir de Russie. ( It’s torture not to include Jubilation XXV.)

    • Olfactoria says:

Hehe, yes, it is torture! 😉
OJ Woman gets many mentions, so sad it is a scrubber for me, there is something in it that grates on my nerves although I can appreciate the perfume I can not wear it. 😦

  12. Vintage Lady says:

    1. Shalimar (old scent of Shalimar) It was a great discovery and since then it remains my favorite

    2. Hasu-no-Hana (I think I could write a lot about this floral chypre and yet… the perfume is powerful beyond words)

    3. I have started to want to get Black Orchid by T. Ford after having smelled at a counter some days ago.

  13. Marie says:

Jubilation 25 – because it’s more Chanel than Chanel
Estee Lauder Pure White Linen Light Breeze – because sometimes Fresh! is what I need, and the dry down is really nice on me
Stella Rose Absolute – because it’s deep, sweet and rosy

Will there be grief counselling before leaving the rest behind?

  14. KathyT says:

I discovered your blog recently, so now is a good time to delurk. For today mine would be:

Hermessence Vetiver Tonka – I love this one! A gourmand vetiver.
Guerlain Cologne du 68 – appropriate for every occasion
Serge Lutens Rousse – fresh spicy cinnamon woods

I’m sure in a few weeks my list will be completely different in the warm weather, but these three would make me happy for a while.
