I never thought of myself as a country person. I love the city, I would never, ever move away from Vienna, and that is why it took me by surprise how much I enjoy our Little House on the Prairie.
We all can’t wait until it is time to go to the cottage again, if possible we go Friday evening, if not, Saturday morning at the latest. It is incredibly satisfying to make a fire, to eat simple meals, to go for a walk in the surrounding meadows and woods. My younger son is turning out to be a top-notch hiker, he puts us all to shame with is stamina and energy. And he adores the cows. My older son found a friend his age at the neighboring farm and is learning a lot, watching and helping at the farm as well as a new dialect.
We are a happy bunch of country bumpkins now! 🙂
But what I wouldn’t want to miss, even in the country is my internet access, thankfully that is no problem. So why don’t we take a little stroll through Perfumeland together…
Undina of Undina’s Looking Glass experienced a fit of jealousy over Ben Affleck, sorry, no, a perfume. I get confused when he is involved. 🙂 Just hop on over and see for yourself.
Olenska of parfümieren wrote such an appetizing review of Jeux de Peau, I had to get my bottle out of the depths of my closet and have been wearing it a lot this week, ideal in this cold and wet weather. (Here is my take.)
Denyse of Grain de Musc wrote such a beautiful and poetic piece about Cartier Baiser Volé, although I fear I love her review a lot more than the fragrance.
Vanessa of Bonkers about Perfume reviews Tom Fords latest offering – Violet Blonde. (Here is my take.)
Suzanne’s Perfume Journal reviewed a DSH perfume – Bancha Extreme, Suzanne finds the most incredible analogies, perfect.
The Candy Perfume Boy is starting a new series of posts about different perfumery notes, his first is his great love – tuberose.
It is not from last week, but this post by Charleston Girl of Best Things in Beauty is haunting me, therefore I thought I’d share it so you’d all be haunted too. This perfume is out of the question (financially), but she sure makes it sound good…
How about your Sunday plans? And are you more of a city dweller or a country lover?
I grew up in a big city (population close to Vienna) and even after moving to the suburban area for many years I kept thinking I would have preferred to live 30 minutes drive north, in San Francisco. And just recently I suddenly realized how much I enjoyed our slightly less crowded and less loud life. I still would like to shop, go out or just walk in a big city but as day-to-day life goes it’s easier where I live now.
The only article I haven’t read before today was the one about Creed’s special perfume. I’m not even curious how it smells. And not because of the price (it’s totally out of question, I can’t believe any one perfume can be worth the price of the complete line-up of classical Amouage for women) but also because Creed completely left me cold so far (I smelled as much as I could in the store on couple of occassions and didn’t like anything enough to put on my skin). But as a curious trivia piece – I was amused.
Thank you for the link and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
I also think the Creed is surely not worth the money, how could it be? But part of me is always a bit drawn in by such things. The search for the ever elusive perfect scent. 🙂
Firstly, kudos for inserting American Gothic into this post, I love that picture, but there is one parody of the image that I think is even better (i hope you don’t mind the added link)
Your little house on the prairie sounds like a wonderful haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I grew up in a tiny village and my siblings and I were raised with lots of tree climbing and fresh air. I now live in a biggish town (it’s desperately trying to be a city but isn’t quite there yet) and only live about 20 minutes away from my old village so it’s still pretty rural here, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Thank you for the link love!
Your picture pretty much capture the look of the husband, but b doesnt look like miss piggy at all……
Thank you very much, G. 🙂 The husband is a bit displeased though and grumbled something about your next dental appointment… 😉
Pls tell Kermit, the husband, that due to his excellent care, I’m not scared of him any longer….
Will do. 🙂
Your childhood sounds lovely! That is what I had too and want to provide for my sons, despite city living during the week. Thanks for the image, there are so many funny alterations of American Gothic out there. My favorite is when they pose like the painting in A Rocky Horror Picture Show in the first scene. 🙂
American Gothic is a great choice to illustrate the post, and I am glad you are enjoying country life so much. It must be great for the boys to be able to safely roam, and it will be interesting to see where son No 2’s interest in cows may lead. Bovine dentist, perhaps? ; – )
I like town and country but have only ever lived in urban areas myself – it it just how things worked out, though as a child growing up in Ireland we owned a series of static caravans in beautiful locations in forest parks and by the sea. I don’t like driving in the country at night, though – had supper at a friend’s last night in the next county whose house is up a tiny lane that is only one car’s width!
Thanks for the mention! I am going to have a quiet Sunday – it’s been quite a stressful week one way and another and it will be nice to have nothing more to do than pick up dry cleaning and a few groceries!
Bovine dentistry could certainly be a promising field where son No2 can leave his mark. 😉 I hope you enjoy your quiet Sunday, Vanessa!
Thanks for this post, as always, B. I find your list of links very useful and helpful.
That’s great, P. I’m glad you find it useful! Enjoy the remainder of your Sunday!
I was born and grew up in a small village in the suburban area of Milan, hated it with all my energies and escaped from it as soon as I could! I love living in the city, I love its reassuring anonimity and the great amount of opportunities it offers. This morning I had a pleasant walk to a baker open on Sunday, enjoying the beautiful autumn air and light, wearing Wazamba- I’ve just received Parfums d’Empire discovery set!- and felt.. in the right place!
Your house in the woods must be wonderful, though!
Have a nice Sunday.
I understand you so well! Anonymity is also very important to me. The forced familiarity of a small town is the worst for me. (I grew up in a small town as well.) And Wazamba! Perfect fall choice, iodine!
One of my favorite paintings – herrlich !
(Once you back in town again : there is a lovely little french bakery in the Lindengasse, with the best brioche – to die for …)
Oh, that sounds good! We are great brioche lovers here! I unwisely told my son what you wrote, and he has been pestering me for hours now to go there and get “the good brioche Lady Jane made” 🙂
Oh my, I tried few times but it never turned out to be the real thing (and it’s lots of work…). So not that I found it I’ll rather go there and pick up some ready ones (btw, the exact address is lindengasse 35 – there are other sweet treats for your boys as well 🙂 )
Thank you, will make the trekk there soon!
Hi, dear Birgit!
I have always lived in a big city and I enjoy its practical side and anonimity. I grew up in a suburb but my contact with the big city has always been constant. I always dream of spending more time in the countryside or near the sea, more connected to the rythms of Nature, or maybe moving to a smaller city.
As for my Sunday plans, we are having elections today, so I voted earlier and am spending the afternoon curled up reading a good book. It is Spring but today feels more like Winter.
Cheers,
Caro
Thanks for sharing, Caro!
Living near the sea must be very nice, although I wouldn’t want a sandy beach, but cliffs. But the big city has its advantages, doesn’t it?
Birgit, I’m glad to hear how much you and your family love your little house in the country. I’ll always be a country girl at heart — I crave the wide open spaces and would ideally love to live out West or in the Southwest. But even more ideally, I’d like to have a place in the city too. (Can’t decide which one, but there are a few big cities I love to visit.)
Thanks for the link love. I’m so badly behind on my blog reading this week, I’ll have to catch up tonight, starting with some of the links you have here. Wishing you a splendid Sunday evening … and looking forward to that Poivre 23 post of yours this week! 🙂
Having the best of both is indeed ideal.
I hope you had a good week, despite being busy.
